The Germanic peoples lived in northern, central, and eastern Europe. Even at its height of military power, the Roman Empire was unable to annex Germanic territory. However, with religious power Rome eventually succeeded in gaining power over the Germanic peoples. As a result, the Latin alphabet of Rome replaced the Runic characters in the upper part of Europe from about the tenth century of our current era. Especially in Scandinavia, the Runes never completely disappeared, because the Runes continued to be used for divination, protection, and other specialized purposes.
