After being passed down orally for many generations, the Popol Vuh was written down between 1554 and 1558 in the language of the Mayan people of the same name, namely Quiché (nowadays usually written as: K’iche’). Literally translated, Popol Vuh means the ‘Book (Popol) that pertains to the Mat (Vuh)’, since a woven mat was used as a royal throne in their society. This Mat therefore symbolized the unity of the community. The remarkable story of the Popol Vuh consists of four parts, which describe, among other things, the battle between the gods, as well as the creation of both the present human, as well as two earlier attempts (that is, the “mud human”, and the “wooden human”).
In ‘Mastering Mayan Mythology’, all-round scientist Johan Oldenkamp shows the mythological validity of the Popol Vuh based on Wholly Science. It contains the entire translated text of Popol Vuh, with explanatory footnotes.
