Genesis

1:1 In [the] beginning, the Theos made the heaven and the earth.
1:2 Now, the earth was invisible and unmade, and darkness [being] upon the abyss. And Theos’ spirit brought forward above the water.
1:3 And the Theos said: “Come into being: light.” And there was light.
1:4 And the Theos beheld the light that [it being] good. And the Theos parted between the light and between the darkness.
1:5 And the Theos called the light ‘day’, and called the darkness ‘night’. And there was evening, and there was morning: [the] first day.
1:6 And the Theos said: “Come into being: a firmness in the midst of the water, and let it be for parting between water and water.” And it happened in this way:
1:7 And the Theos brought forth the firmness. And the Theos parted between the water which was underneath the firmness and between the water above the firmness.
1:8 And the Theos called the firmness ‘heaven’. And the Theos beheld that [it being] good. And there was evening, and there was morning: [the] second day.
1:9 And the Theos said: “Let be gathered together the water underneath the heaven into one gathering, and let be seen the dry.” And it happened in this way: and the water underneath the heaven gathered together into its gatherings, and the dry appeared.
1:10 And the Theos called the dry ‘earth’, and called the systems of water ‘of the sea’. And the Theos beheld that [it being] good.
1:11 And the Theos said: “Let the earth make to grow food of grass sowing seed according to kind, and according to likeness, and the fruitful tree making fruit which seed is in it, according to kind, upon the earth.” And it happened in this way:
1:12 And the earth brought forth food of grass sowing seed according to kind, and according to likeness, and the fruitful tree making fruit which seed is in it, according to kind, on the earth.
1:13 And the Theos beheld that [it being] good. And there was evening, and there was morning: [the] third day.
1:14 And the Theos said: “Come into being: luminaries in the firmness of the heaven for giving light upon the earth, to part between the day and between the night. And let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and for years.
1:15 And let them be for light in the firmness of the heaven, so as to shine upon the earth.” And it happened in this way:
1:16 And the Theos made the two great luminaries: the greater luminary into leading the day and the lesser light into leading the night and the stars.
1:17 And the Theos put them in the firmness of the heaven, so as to shine upon the earth,
1:18 and to lead the day and the night, and to part between the light and between the darkness. And the Theos beheld that [it being] good.
1:19 And there was evening, and there was morning: [the] fourth day.
1:20 And the Theos said: “Let the waters bring forth the crawling of living soul and the winged flying above the earth below the firmness of heaven.” And it happened in this way:
1:21 And the Theos made the huge water beings, and every crawling of living soul, which the waters brought forth, according to their kind, and every feathered winged [creature] according to kind. And the Theos beheld that [it being] good.
1:22 And the Theos blessed them saying: “Increase and multiply, and fill the waters in the sea. And let the winged be multiplied over the earth.”
1:23 And there was evening, and there was morning: [the] fifth day.
1:24 And the Theos said: “Let the earth bring forth living soul according to kind: four-footed and creeping [creatures] and wild beasts of the earth according to kind”. And it happened in this way:
1:25 And the Theos made the wild beasts of the earth according to kind, and the beasts of burden according to their kind, and all the crawling [creatures] of the earth according to kind. And the Theos beheld that [it being] good.
1:26 And the Theos said: “Let us make [the] human according to our image and according to likeness. And let them rule over the fishes of the sea, and the winged [creatures] of the heaven, and the cattle, and all the earth, and all the crawling [creatures] crawling upon the earth.”
1:27 And the Theos made the human. According to Theos’ image he made him. Male and female, he made them.
1:28 And the Theos blessed them, saying: “Increase and multiply, and fill the earth, and master it. And lead the fishes of the sea, and the winged [creatures] of the heaven, and the whole cattle, and all the earth, and all the crawling, crawling upon the earth.”
1:29 And the Theos said: “Behold, I have given to you every grass bearing sowing seed which is upon the earth, and every tree which has in itself the sowing seed of fruit: to you it shall be for food,
1:30 and to all the wild beasts of the earth, and to all the winged [creatures] of the heaven, and to every crawling [creature] crawling upon the earth, which has in itself the soul of life, even every green grass for food.” And it happened in this way.
1:31 And the Theos beheld all as many as he made. And behold: [it being] very good. And there was evening, and there was morning: [the] sixth day.
2:1 And completed were the heaven and the earth, and all the cosmos of them.
2:2 And the Theos completed in the sixth day his works which he did. And he rested on the seventh day away from all his works which he did.
2:3 And the Theos blessed the seventh day and declared it different, for in it he rested from all his works which the Theos began to do.
2:4 This [is] the scroll of [the] origin of heaven and earth, when it became, in the day the Theos made the heaven and the earth,
2:5 and every green field before it existed upon the earth, and all the grass of [the] field before [its] rising, for [the] lord did not rain upon the earth, and there was no human to work it.
2:6 But a spring went up from out of the earth, and it watered all the face of the earth.
2:7 And the Theos formed the human, dust from the earth. And he breathed into his face the breath of life, and the human became a living soul.
2:8 And the Theos planted paradise in Edem according to the rising, and he placed there the human whom he formed.
2:9 And the Theos caused yet to rise up from the earth every tree, beautiful in appearance, and good for food, and the tree of life, in the middle of the paradise, and the tree, the one to know knowing good and evil.
2:10 And a river goes forth from Edem to water the paradise. From there it separates into four beginnings.
2:11 [The] name of the one [is] Phison. This [is] the [one] encircling all the land of Evilat, where there is the gold.
2:12 And the gold of that land [is] good. And there is the charcoal, and the leek-green stone.
2:13 And [the] name of the second river [is] Geon. This [is] the [one] encircling all the land of Ethiopia.
2:14 And the third river [is the] Tigris. This [is] the [one] going forth over against [the] Assyrians. And the fourth river [is the] Euphrates.
2:15 And [the] lord Theos took the human whom he formed, and placed him in the paradise, to work and to guard it.
2:16 And the lord Theos instructed Adam, saying: “From every tree in the paradise you shall eat food,
2:17 but from the tree of the knowing good and evil, you shall not eat from it. But in whatever day you should eat from it, you shall die to death.”
2:18 And the lord Theos said: “[It is] not good [for] the human to be alone. Let us make for him a helper according to him.”
2:19 And the Theos formed yet from out of the earth all the wild beasts of the field, and all the winged [creatures] of the heaven. And he led them to Adam, to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called any living soul, that [was the] name to it.
2:20 And Adam called names to all the cattle, and to all the winged [creatures] of the heaven, and to all the wild beasts of the field. But to Adam, there was not found a helper likened to him.
2:21 And the lord Theos put a change of state over Adam, and he slept. And he took one side of him, and filled [it] up [with] flesh against it.
2:22 And the lord Theos built the side which he took away from Adam into [his] wife. And he led her towards Adam.
2:23 And Adam said: “This now [is] bone from out of my bones, and flesh from out of my flesh.” She shall be called woman, because she was taken from the man.
2:24 Because of this shall [the] human leave his father and mother, and shall glue to his wife, and the two shall be into one flesh.
2:25 And the two were naked, both Adam and his woman. And they were not ashamed.
3:1 But the serpent was the most shrewd of all the wild beasts, of the ones whom the lord Theos made upon the earth. And the serpent said to the wife: “Wherefore said the Theos: No way should you eat from all the trees of the paradise?”.
3:2 And the woman said: “From fruit of the wood of the paradise we shall eat,
3:3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the paradise, the Theos said: Eat not from it, nor touch it, that you should not die.”
3:4 And the serpent said to the wife: “Not to death will you die,
3:5 for the Theos knows that in whatever day you should eat of it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be as gods, knowing good and evil.”
3:6 And the woman saw that the tree is good for food, and pleasing to the eyes to behold, and beautiful for contemplating. And having taken of the fruit of it, she ate, and she also gave [to] her husband with her, and they ate.
3:7 And the eyes of the two were opened, and they came to know that they were naked. And they sewed leaves of a fig-tree, and made themselves loincloths.
3:8 And walking in the paradise at dusk, they heard the voice of the lord Theos. And both Adam and his woman hid in the midst of the wood of the paradise away from [the] face of the lord Theos.
3:9 And the Theos called Adam, and said to him: “Adam, where are you?”
3:10 And he said to him: “I, walking in the paradise, heard your voice, and I feared, for I am naked, and I hid.”
3:11 And the Theos said to him: “Who declared to you that you are naked, unless you ate from the tree of which I have instructed you ‘This alone not to eat form it’?”
3:12 And Adam said: “The woman with me whom you gave, she gave to me from the tree, and I ate.”
3:13 And the Lord Theos said to the wife: “What [is] this you did?” And the woman said: “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
3:14 And the Lord Theos said to the serpent: “Because you did this, you [are] accursed from all the cattle, and from all the wild beasts of the [ones] upon the earth. Upon your breast and belly, you shall go, and you shall eat earth all the days of your life.
3:15 And I will put enmity between you and between the wife, and between your seed and between her seed. She shall observe your head, and you shall observe her heel.”
3:16 And to the wife, he said: “In multiplying, I will multiply your griefs and your groanings. In griefs you will bear children, and [be] towards your submission to your husband, and he will rule over you.”
3:17 And [to] Adam, he said: “Because you hearkened to the voice of your wife, and ate from the tree of which I have instructed to you, [saying] ‘This alone not to eat from it’, accursed is the soil in your works. In griefs you will eat it, all the days of your life.
3:18 Thorn-bushes and thistles will rise to you, and you will eat the grass of the field.
3:19 In [the] sweat of your face you will eat your bread, until the returning [of] you into the earth from out of which you were taken. For earth you are, and unto earth you will return.”
3:20 And Adam called the name of his wife ‘Life’, for she was [the] mother of all the living.
3:21 And the lord Theos made [to] Adam and his wife garments of skins, and clothed them.
3:22 And the Theos said: “Behold, Adam has become as one of us, to know good and evil. And now, lest at any time he might stretch out the hand, and should take from the tree of life, and should eat, and will live into the aeon.”
3:23 And the lord Theos send him away from out of the paradise of indulgence, to work the earth from which he was taken.
3:24 And he cast out Adam, and settled him opposite to the paradise of indulgence, and ordered the cheroubim and the flaming, turning broadsword to guard the way of the tree of life.
4:1 And Adam knew his wife, Eva. And conceiving, she brought forth Kaïn, and said: “I acquired a human through the Theos.”
4:2 And she proceeded to bring forth his brother Abel. And Abel became a shepherd of sheep, but Kaïn was working the land.
4:3 And it happened after days that Kaïn brought from the fruits of the land a sacrifice to the lord.
4:4 And Abel himself also brought [a sacrifice] from the first-born of his sheep, and from his fatlings. And the Theos looked upon Abel, and upon his gifts.
4:5 But upon Kaïn, and upon his sacrifices, he paid no attention to. And Kaïn grieved exceedingly, and the face became downcast.
4:6 And the lord Theos said to Kaïn: “Why are you deeply grieved, and why [is] your face downcast?
4:7 If you brought not rightly, moreover not rightly divided, [you] missed the mark. Be still, towards you [shall be] his submission, and you will rule him.”
4:8 And Kaïn said to his brother Abel: “Let us go into the plain.” And it happened in their being in the plain, [that] Kaïn rose up against his brother Abel, and killed him.
4:9 And the lord Theos said to Kaïn: “Where is your brother Abel?” And he said: “I do not know not. I am not [the] guard of my brother.”
4:10 And [the] lord said: “What did you do? [The] voice of your brother’s blood cries to me from the earth.
4:11 And now, accursed [are] you, away from the earth who gaped her mouth wide to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
4:12 When you work the earth, and [it does] not add to give her strength to you, [then in] moaning and trembling you will be upon the earth.
4:13 And Kaïn said to [the] lord: “My cause [is too] great to forgive me.
4:14 If you cast me today from [the] face of the earth, and from your face, I will hide, and I will be moaning and trembling upon the earth. And it will be that the whole finding me, will kill me.”
4:15 And the lord Theos said to him: “Not thus, [as] the whole killing Kaïn will be paralyzed [by] punishing seven [times].” And the lord Theos put a sign [to] Kaïn [for] the whole finding him to not do him away.
4:16 And Kaïn went forth from [the] face of the Theos, and he lived in Naïd land, opposite Edem.
4:17 And Kaïn knew his wife. And conceiving, she bore Enoch. And he was building a city [-state]. And he named the [city-] state after the name of his son Enoch.
4:18 And [to] Enoch was born Gaïdad. And Gaïdad begot Maleleél. And Maleleél begot Mathousala. And Mathousala begot Lamech.
4:19 And Lamech took to himself two wives: [the] name of the one [was] Ada, and [the] name of the second [was] Sella.
4:20 And Ada bore Iobel. This [one] was the father of those dwelling in tents, feeding cattle.
4:21 And [the] name [of] his brother [was] Ioubal. This [one] was the [one] introducing [the] psaltery and [the] harp.
4:22 And Sella also bore Thobel. And he was a hammersmith, a brazier of brass and iron. And [the] sister of Thobel was Noéma.
4:23 And Lamech said [to] his own wives Ada and Sella: “Hear my voice, wives of Lamech! Give ear to my words, for I killed a man into a wound to me, and a youth into a bruise to me.
4:24 For punishing seven times [is] from Kaïn, but from Lamech seventy times seven.”
4:25 And Adam knew his wife, Eva. And conceiving, she bore a son. And she named his name Seth, saying: “For the Theos raised up to me another seed instead of Abel, whom Kaïn killed.”
4:26 And [to] Seth was born a son. And he named his name Enos. This one hoped to call upon the name of the lord Theos.
5:1 This [is] the scroll of [the] origin of [the] human in which day the Theos made Adam. According to [the] image of Theos, he made him.
5:2 Male and female, he made them. And he blessed them. And he named his name Adam, in which day he made them.
5:3 And Adam lived thirty and two hundred years. And he begot according to his form, and according to his image. And he named his name Seth.
5:4 And the days of Adam, which he lived after his begetting Seth, were seven hundred years. And he begot sons and daughters.
5:5 And all the days of Adam which he lived were thirty and nine hundred, and he died.
5:6 And Seth lived five and two hundred years, and he begot Enos.
5:7 And Seth lived after his begetting Enos, seven and seven hundred years. And he begot sons and daughters.
5:8 And all the days of Seth were twelve and nine hundred years, and he died.
5:9 And Enos lived hundred ninety years, and he begot Kaïnan.
5:10 And Enos lived after his begetting Kaïnan fifteen and seven hundred years. And he begot sons and daughters.
5:11 And all the days of Enos were five and nine hundred years, and he died.
5:12 And Kaïnan lived seventy and hundred years, and he begot Maleleél.
5:13 And Kaïnan lived after his begetting Maleleél forty and seven hundred years. And he begot sons and daughters.
5:14 And all the days of Kaïnan were ten and nine hundred years, and he died.
5:15 And Maleleél lived five and sixty and hundred years, and he begot Iared.
5:16 And Maleleél lived after his begetting Iared thirty and seven hundred years. And he begot sons and daughters.
5:17 And all the days of Maleleél were five and ninety and eight hundred years, and he died.
5:18 And Iared lived two and sixty and hundred years, and he begot Enoch.
5:19 And Iared lived after his begetting Enoch, eight hundred years. And he begot sons and daughters.
5:20 And all the days of Iared were two and sixty and nine hundred years, and he died.
5:21 And Enoch lived five and sixty and hundred years, and he begat Mathousala.
5:22 And Enoch was well-pleasing [to] the Theos. And Enoch lived after his begetting Mathousala two hundred years. And he begot sons and daughters.
5:23 And all the days of Enoch were five and sixty and three hundred years.
5:24 And Enoch was well-pleasing [to] the Theos. And he was not found, because the Theos transferred him.
5:25 And Mathousala lived seven and sixty and hundred years, and he begot Lamech.
5:26 And Mathousala lived after his begetting Lamech two and eight hundred years. And he begot sons and daughters.
5:27 And all the days of Mathusala which he lived, were nine and sixty and nine hundred years, and he died.
5:28 And Lamech lived eight and eighty and hundred years, and he begot a son.
5:29 And he named his name Nóe, saying: “This [one] will rest us from our works, and from the griefs of our hands, and from the earth, which the lord Theos cursed.”
5:30 And Lamech lived after his begetting Nóe, five hundred and sixty and five years. And he begot sons and daughters.
5:31 And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and fifty three years, and he died.
5:32 And Nóe was five hundred years, and he begot three sons: Sem, Cham, and Iapheth.
6:1 And it came to pass when the humans began to become many upon the earth, and daughters were born to them:
6:2 And the sons of the Theos were beholding the daughters of the humans, that they were good, [that] they took to themselves wives from all of whom they chose.
6:3 And the lord Theos said: “No way should my spirit remain among with these humans, because of their being flesh. And their days will be hundred twenty years.”
6:4 But the giants were upon the earth in those days. And after that, the sons of the Theos continually entered towards the daughters of the humans, and procreated for themselves. Those were the giants, the [ones] from the aeon, the famous humans.
6:5 And the lord Theos [was] beholding that the evils of the humans were multiplying upon the earth. And all that [the human] considered in his heart [was being] diligently upon the wicked [things] all the days.
6:6 And the Theos pondered that he made the human upon the earth, and he considered [this].
6:7 And the Theos said: “I will wipe away the human whom I made from [the] face of the earth, from human unto beast of burden, and from crawling unto the winged [creatures] of the heaven, for I repented that I made them.”
6:8 But Nóe found favor before the lord Theos.
6:9 And these are Nóe’s creations: Nóe [was a] righteous human, being completed in his generation. Nóe was well-pleasing to the Theos.
6:10 And Nóe procreated three sons: Sem, Cham, Iapheth.
6:11 But the earth was corrupted before Theos, and the earth was filled [with] iniquity.
6:12 And the lord Theos saw the earth. And it was being corrupted, because all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth.
6:13 And the lord Theos said to Nóe: “[It is] time for every human to come before me, because the earth is filled [with] iniquity by means of them. And behold, I destroy them, and the earth.
6:14 Make therefore for yourself a four-cornered box from wood. Nests you shall make throughout the box. And you shall apply pitch to it, from inside and from outside with the pitch.
6:15 And so you shall make the box: three hundred cubits the length of the box, and fifty cubits the width, and thirty cubits the height of it.
6:16 By an assembling, you shall make the box. And unto a cubit from above you shall complete it. But you shall make the door of the box from out of [the] side. You shall make it with ground [floors], second storeys, and third storeys.
6:17 But I, behold, I bring a cataclysm of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is [the] breath of life under the heaven. And as much as be upon the earth shall come to an end.
6:18 And I will establish my covenant with you. And you shall enter the box: you, and with you, your sons, and your wife, and the wives of your sons.
6:19 And from all the cattle, and from all the crawling [creatures], and from all the wild beasts, and from all flesh, two by two from all you shall bring into the box, that you nourish [them] [together] with yourself: male and female they shall be.
6:20 From all the fowl according to kind, and from all the cattle according to kind, and from all the crawling [ones] crawling upon the earth according to their kind. Two by two from all enter into you, to be nourish with you, male and female.
6:21 But you shall take to yourself from all of the foods which you shall eat. And you shall gather [them] together to yourself. And it shall be to you and to them to eat.”
6:22 And Nóe did all. As much as the lord Theos instructed him, so he did.
7:1 And the lord Theos said to Nóe: “Enter, you and all your house into the box, for I beheld you [as] righteous before me in this generation.
7:2 And of the clean cattle, bring in for yourself seven [by] seven, male and female, but from the unclean cattle two [by] two, male and female;
7:3 and from the clean winged [creatures] of the heaven seven [by] seven, male and female; and from all unclean winged creatures two [by] two, male and female, to keep seed alive upon all the earth.
7:4 For yet seven days, [and] I will bring rain upon the earth, forty days and forty nights. And I will wipe away every height which I have made from [the] face of all the earth.”
7:5 And Nóe did all as much as the lord Theos instructed him.
7:6 And Nóe was six hundred years, and the cataclysm of the water came upon the earth.
7:7 And Nóe and his sons, and his wife, and the wives of his sons, entered with him into the box, because of the water of the cataclysm.
7:8 And from the clean winged [creatures], and from the unclean winged [creatures], and from the clean cattle, and from the unclean cattle, and from the wild beasts, and from all of the ones crawling upon the earth,
7:9 two [by] two they entered with Nóe into the box; male and female, as the Theos instructed him.
7:10 And it came to pass after the seven days: and the water of the cataclysm came upon the earth.
7:11 In the six hundredth year in the life of Nóe, in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, [in] this day, all the fountains of the abyss broke forth, and the waterfalls of the heaven were opened.
7:12 And rain was upon the earth, forty days and forty nights.
7:13 In this day entered Nóe, Sem, Cham, Iapheth, the sons of Nóe, and the wife of Nóe, and the three wives of his sons with him into the box.
7:14 And all the wild beasts, according to kind, and all the cattle, according to kind, and every crawling [creature] moving upon the earth, according to kind, and every winged [creature], according to kind,
7:15 they entered towards Nóe into the box, two [by] two, male and female, from all flesh in which there is the breath of life.
7:16 And the [ones] entering, male and female, from all flesh, entered as the Theos instructed Nóe. And the lord Theos closed the box from outside of it.
7:17 And the cataclysm came to pass, forty days and forty nights. And the water multiplied and lifted up the box, and raised it up high from the earth.
7:18 And the water prevailed and multiplied exceedingly upon the earth. And the box was borne upon the water.
7:19 But the water prevailed exceedingly, exceedingly upon the earth, and covered all the high mountains which were under the heaven.
7:20 Fifteen cubits atop was the water raised, and it covered all the high mountains.
7:21 And there died all flesh moving upon the earth, of the winged [creatures], and of the cattle, and from the wild beasts, and every crawling [creature] moving upon the earth, and every human,
7:22 and all as much as have [the] breath of life, and all which was upon the dry [land], died.
7:23 And he wiped away every height which was upon [the] face of all the earth, from human unto beast of burden, and [the] crawling [creature], and the winged [creature] of the heaven. And they were wiped away from the earth. And he left behind only Nóe, and the ones with him in the box.
7:24 And the water was raised up high from the earth, hundred fifty days.
8:1 And the Theos remembered Nóe, and all of the wild beasts, and all of the cattle, and all of the winged [creatures], and all of the crawling [creatures], as much as were with him in the box. And the Theos brought a wind upon the earth, and the water abated.
8:2 And the fountains of the abyss were revealed, and the torrents of the heaven. And the rain from the heaven was constrained.
8:3 And the water gave way, going away from the earth. And after fifty and hundred days the water was lessened.
8:4 And the box sat down in the seventh month, [on the] seventh and twentieth of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.
8:5 And the water going forth, lessened until the tenth month. In the first of the month, the heads of the mountains appeared.
8:6 And it came to pass after forty days, Nóe opened the window of the box which he made. And he sent forth the crow to see if the water abated.
8:7 And going forth it returned not as long as the drying up of the water away from the earth [lasted].
8:8 And he sent the dove after it to see if the water abated away from the earth.
8:9 And the dove not finding rest for her feet, returned to him into the box, because the water was upon all the face of the earth. And stretching out the hand, he took her to himself, and brought her into the box.
8:10 And waiting still another seven days, he again sent forth the dove from out of the box.
8:11 And the dove returned to him. And she had a leaf of an olive twig in her mouth. And Nóe knew that the water abated from the earth.
8:12 And waiting still another seven days, he again sent forth the dove. And she proceeded not to return to him again.
8:13 And it came to pass in the one and six hundredth year of the life of Nóe, [in] the first month, [day] one of the month, [that] the water subsided from the earth. And Nóe uncovered the roof of the box which he made. And he saw that the water subsided from [the] face of the earth.
8:14 And in the second month, seventh and the twentieth of the month, the earth was dried.
8:15 And the lord Theos said towards Nóe, saying:
8:16 “Come forth from out the box, you and your wife, and your sons, and the wives of your sons with you.
8:17 And all flesh from winged [creatures] unto cattle, and every crawling [creature] moving upon the earth, lead out with yourself. And grow and multiply upon the earth.”
8:18 And Nóe came forth, and his wife, and his sons, and the wives of his sons with him.
8:19 And all the wild beasts, and all the cattle and every winged [creature], and every crawling [creature] moving upon the earth, according to their kind, came forth from out of the box.
8:20 And Nóe built an altar to the lord. And took from all the clean cattle, and from all the clean winged [creatures], and offered into a whole-burnt-offering upon the altar.
8:21 And [the] lord smelled the smell of pleasant aroma. And considering, the lord Theos said: “I will not add more to curse the earth on account of the works of humans, because the thought of [the] human clings upon the wicked [things] from his youth. I will not add then still to strike all living flesh as I did.
8:22 All the days of the earth, seed and harvest, chilliness and sweltering heat, summer and spring, day and night, will not be caused to cease.”
9:1 And the Theos blessed Nóe and his sons, and said to them: “Grow and multiply, and fulfill the earth and master it.
9:2 And the fear of you and trembling will be upon all the wild beasts of the earth, upon all the winged [creatures] of the heaven, and upon all [creatures] moving upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea. Under [your] hands, I have given [them] to you.
9:3 And every crawling [creature] which is living shall be to you for food. As herbs of grass, I have given to you all.
9:4 Except flesh with blood of soul, you shall not eat.
9:5 And for your blood of your soul from out of [the] hand of all the wild beasts, I shall require it. And from out of [the] hand of a human’s brother, I shall require it.
9:6 The one shedding blood of a human, in return his blood shall be shed, for in Theos’ image, I made the human.
9:7 But you: grow and multiply, and fulfill the earth, and master it.”
9:8 And the Theos said to Nóe, and to his sons with him, saying:
9:9 “And behold, I raise up my covenant to you, and [to] your seed after you,
9:10 and every living soul after you, from fowls, and from cattle, and with all the wild beasts of the earth, as many as are with you, from all the ones coming forth from out of the box.
9:11 And I will make to stand my covenant with you. And all flesh will not die any longer from the water of the cataclysm. And there shall not be any longer a cataclysm of water to destroy all the earth.”
9:12 And the lord Theos said to Nóe: “This is [the] sign of the covenant which I put between me and you, and between every living soul, as many as are with you for aeonial generations.
9:13 I put my bow in the cloud, and it will be for a sign of covenant between me and the earth.
9:14 And it will be in my gathering together [the] clouds upon the earth, [that] the bow will be seen in the cloud.
9:15 And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you, and between every living soul in all flesh. And there will not be any longer the water for a cataclysm, so as to wipe away all flesh.
9:16 And my bow will be in the cloud, and I will see it to remember the aeonial covenant between me and the earth, and between [the] living soul which is in all flesh upon the earth.”
9:17 And the Theos said to Nóe: “This [is] the sign of the Covenant, which I have made between me and all flesh which is upon the earth.”
9:18 Now, the sons of Nóe, the ones coming forth from out of the box, [are] Sem, Cham, Iapheth. And Cham was father of Chanaán.
9:19 These three are the sons of Nóe. From these, [it] was dispersed upon all the earth.
9:20 And [the] human Nóe began [to be a] farmer of [the] earth, and he planted a vineyard.
9:21 And he drank of the wine, and became drunk, and became naked in his house.
9:22 And Cham, the father of Chanaán, perceived the nakedness of his father. And going forth, he reported [it] to his two brothers outside.
9:23 And Sem and Iapheth, taking the outer garment, put [it] upon their two backs and went backwards, and covered up the nakedness of their father. And their face [was] backwards. And they saw not the nakedness of their father.
9:24 And Nóe sobered up from the wine, and knew as much as his younger son had done to him.
9:25 And he said: “Be accursed, child Chanaán. A servant will he be [to] his brothers.
9:26 And he said: “Blessed be the lord Theos of Sem. And Chanaán will be his household servant.
9:27 May the Theos make room for Iapheth, and let him inhabit in the dwellings of Sem. And let Chanaán become his servant.
9:28 And Nóe lived after the cataclysm three hundred fifty years.
9:29 And all the days of Nóe were nine hundred fifty years, and he died.
10:1 Now these [are] the generations of the sons of Nóe: Sem, Cham, Iapheth. And sons were born to them after the cataclysm.
10:2 Sons of Iapheth: Gamer, and Magog, and Madaï, and Iovan, and Elisa, and Thobel, and Mosoch, and Thiras.
10:3 And the sons of Gamer: Aschanaz, and Riphath, and Thorgama.
10:4 And the sons of Iovan: Elisa, and Tharsis, Kitioi, Rodioi.
10:5 From these were separated the islands of the nations in their land, each according to tongue, in their tribes, and in their ethnicity.
10:6 Now [the] sons of Cham: Chous, and Mesraïm, Phoud, and Chanaán.
10:7 And the sons of Chous: Saba, and Evila, and Sabatha, and Regma, and Sabakatha. And [the] sons of Regma: Saba, and Dadan.
10:8 And Chous procreated Nebrod. This [one] began to be a giant upon the earth.
10:9 This [one] was a giant hunter before the lord Theos. On account of this, they will say: “As Nebrod, a giant hunter before [the] lord.”
10:10 And [the] beginning of his kingdom was Babylon, and Orech, and Archad, and Chalanne, in the land of Sennaár.
10:11 From out of that land came forth Assour, and he built Nineve, and the city Rhooboth, and Chalach,
10:12 and Dasem between Nineve and Chalach. This [is] the great city.
10:13 And Mesraïm begot the Loudiïm, and the Enemetiïm, and the Labiïm, and the Nephthaliïm, and the Patrosoniïm,
10:14 and the Chasloniïm, from where came forth Phylistiïm, and the Kaphthoriïm.
10:15 And Chanaán begot Sidona, [the] first-born, and the Chettaion,
10:16 and the Iebousaion, and the Amorraion, and the Gergesaion,
10:17 and the Evaion, and the Aroukaion, and the Asennaion,
10:18 and the Aradion, and the Samaraion, and the Amathi. And after this, the tribes of the Chananaion were dispersed.
10:19 And the boundaries of the Chananaion were from Sidon unto [the] coming into Gerar and Gaza, unto [the] coming into Sodoma and Gomorra, Adam and Seboïm, as far as Lasa.
10:20 There [are] the sons of Cham in their tribes according to their tongues, in their countries, and in their ethnicity.
10:21 And to Sem was born, namely to him, [the] father of all the sons of Eber, [the] brother of Iapheth the greater.
10:22 Sons of Sem: Ailam, and Assour, and Arphaxad, and Loud, and Aram, and Kaïnan.
10:23 And sons of Aram: Os, and Oul, and Gather, and Mosoch.
10:24 And Arphaxad begot Kaïnan, and Kaïnan begot Sala. And Sala begot Eber.
10:25 And to Eber were born two sons; the name of the one is Phaleg, because in his days the earth was divided. And [the] name of his brother [is] Iektan.
10:26 Iektan procreated Elmodad, and Saleph, and Asarmoth, and Jarach,
10:27 and Odorra, and Aizel, and Dekla,
10:28 and Abimeél, and Sabeu,
10:29 and Ouphir, and Evila, and Iobab. All these [are] the sons of Iektan.
10:30 And their dwelling was from Masse, unto [the] coming into Saphera, a mountain of [the] east.
10:31 These [are] the sons of Sem in their tribes, according to their tongues, in their countries, and in their ethnicity.
10:32 These [are] the tribes of [the] sons of Nóe, according to their generations, according to their nations. From these were the islands of the nations scattered upon the earth after the cataclysm.
11:1 And all the earth was one lip, and one voice to all.
11:2 And it came to pass in their moving away from the rising, [that] they found a plain in [the] land of Sennaár. And they dwelt there.
11:3 And a human said to his neighbor: “Come, let us make bricks and bake them in fire.” And to them, the brick became as stone, and pitch was their clay.
11:4 And they said: “Come, let us build to ourselves a city [-state] and tower of which the top will be unto the heaven. And let us make to ourselves a name, before being scattered upon [the] face of all the earth.”
11:5 And [the] lord went down to see the city [-state] and the tower, which the sons of the humans built.
11:6 And [the] lord said: “Behold, [there is] one kind and one lip for all, and they began to do this. It shall now not fail from out of them, all as much as they might attempt to do.
11:7 Come, and going down, let us confound their tongue, that they should not hear the voice of the neighbor.”
11:8 And [the] lord scattered them from there upon the face of all the earth. And they ceased building the city [-state] and the tower.
11:9 Because of this, the name of it was called confusion, because there [the] lord confounded the lips of all the earth. And from there [the] lord scattered them upon [the] face of all the earth.
11:10 And these [are] the generations of Sem: And Sem was a hundred years when he begot Arphaxad, [the] second year after the cataclysm.
11:11 And Sem lived, after his begetting Arphaxad, five hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters, and he died.
11:12 And Arphaxad lived hundred thirty five years, and he begot Kaïnan.
11:13 And Arphaxad lived, after his begetting Kaïnan, four hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters, and he died. And Kaïnan lived hundred and thirty years and begot Sala. And Kaïnan lived after his begetting Sala, three hundred thirty years, and he begot sons and daughters, and he died.
11:14 And Sala lived hundred thirty years, and he begot Eber.
11:15 And Sala lived after his begetting Heber, three hundred thirty years, and he begot sons and daughters, and he died.
11:16 And Eber lived hundred and thirty four years, and he begot Phaleg.
11:17 And Eber lived after his begetting Phaleg two hundred and seventy years, and he begot sons and daughters, and he died.
11:18 And Phaleg lived thirty and hundred years, and he begot Ragau.
11:19 And Phaleg lived after his begetting Ragau nine and two hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters, and he died.
11:20 And Ragau lived and hundred thirty and two years, and he begot Serouch.
11:21 And Ragau lived after his begetting Serouch two hundred seven years, and he begot sons and daughters, and he died.
11:22 And Serouch lived hundred thirty years, and begot Nachor.
11:23 And Serouch lived after his begetting Nachor two hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters, and he died.
11:24 And Nachor lived hundred seventy nine years, and begot Thara.
11:25 And Nachor lived after his begetting Thara hundred twenty-five years, and he begot sons and daughters, and he died.
11:26 And Thara lived seventy years, and he begot Abram, and Nachor, and Arran.
11:27 And these [are] the generations of Thara. Thara begot Abram, and Nachor, and Arran. And Arran begot Lot.
11:28 And Arran died in the presence of his father Thara, in the land in which he was born, in the region of the Chaldaion.
11:29 And Abram and Nachor took to themselves wives: [the] name of the wife of Abram [being] Sara, and [the] name of the wife of Nachor [being] Melcha, daughter of Arran. And [he was the] father of Melcha, and [the] father of Iescha.
11:30 And Sara was barren, and not able to produce children.
11:31 And Thara took his son Abram, and Lot, [the] son of Arran, [the] son of his son, and his daughter-in-law Sara, [the] wife of his son Abram, and he led them from out of the region of the Chaldaion, to go into the land of Chanaán. And they came as far as Charran, and dwelt there.
11:32 And all the days of Thara in the land of Charran were two hundred five years. And Thara died in Charran.
12:1 And [the] lord said to Abram: “Come forth from out of your land, and from out of your kindred, and from out of the house of your father, and come into the land which ever I shall show to you.
12:2 And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will magnify your name, and you will be a blessing.
12:3 And I will bless the [ones] blessing you; and the ones cursing you, I will curse. And all the tribes of the earth will be blessed by you.”
12:4 And Abram went just as [the] lord spoke to him. And Lot set out with him. And Abram was seventy-five years [old] when he came forth from out of Charran.
12:5 And Abram took his wife Sara, and Lot, [the] son of his brother, and all their possessions, as many as they acquired, and every soul which they acquired from out of Charran, and they went forth to go into Chanaán. And they entered into the Chanaán.
12:6 And Abram traveled through the land unto the place of Sychem, unto the high oak. And the Chananaion then inhabited the land.
12:7 And [the] lord appeared [to] Abram, and said to him: “I will give this land [to] your seed.” And Abram built there an altar to the lord, to the one appearing to him.
12:8 And he left from there into the mountain east of Baithel. And there he set up his tent, with Baithel according to [the] west, and Aggai according to [the] east. And there he built an altar to the lord, and called upon the name of [the] lord.
12:9 And Abram departed; and going, he encamped in the desolate.
12:10 And there was a famine upon the land. And Abram went down into Aigyptos to sojourn there, because the famine grew in strength upon the land.
12:11 And it was when Abram approached to enter into Aigyptos, [that] Abram said to his wife Sara: “I know that you are a good-looking woman.
12:12 It will be then as when Aigyptioi shall see you, they shall say that this is his wife, and they will kill me, and procure you.
12:13 Say then this: ‘I am his sister’, so that it may become good to me on account of you, and my soul shall live because of you.
12:14 And it came to pass when Abram entered into Aigyptos, the Aigyptioi were looking at his wife, for she was exceedingly beautiful.
12:15 And the rulers of Pharao saw her, and praised her to Pharao; and they brought her into the house of Pharao.
12:16 And they treated Abram well on account of her. And he became sheep, and calves, and donkeys, and menservants, and maidservants, and mules, and camels.
12:17 And the lord chastised Pharao [with] great and severe chastisements, and his house, on account of Sara, the wife of Abram.
12:18 And Pharao calling Abram, said: “What [is] this you did to me, that you reported not to me that she is your wife?
12:19 Why did you say: ‘She is my sister’, and I took her to myself as wife? And now, behold, your wife [is] before you. Taking [her], run from [me].”
12:20 And Pharao commanded [the] men concerning Abram, to escort him [out], and his wife, and all as much as was his.
13:1 And Abram went up from out of Aigyptos, he, and his wife, and all of his, and Lot with him, into the desolate.
13:2 And Abram was exceedingly rich in cattle, and silver, and gold.
13:3 And he went from where he came, into the desolate as far as Baithel, unto the place where his tent was before, between Baithel and between Aggai,
13:4 into the place of the altar, which he made there at first. And there Abram called upon the name of [the] lord.
13:5 And to Lot, the [one] going [forth] with Abram was sheep, and oxen, and tents.
13:6 And the land had not space for them to inhabit together, because their possessions [were] many, and they were not able to inhabit together.
13:7 And there was a fight between the shepherds of the cattle of Abram, and between the shepherds of the cattle of Lot. And the Chananaion and the Pherezaion then inhabited the land.
13:8 And Abram said to Lot: “Let there not be a fight between me and you, and between my shepherds and between your shepherds, for we are humans [and] brothers.
13:9 Behold: Is not the whole earth before you? Separate entirely from me. If you [go] into [the] left, I [will go] into [the] right; but if you [go] into [the] right, I [will go] into [the] left.”
13:10 And Lot, lifting up his eyes, seeing all the country round about Iordanés, that all was watered, before the overthrowing by the Theos [of] Sodoma and Gomorra, like as the paradise of the Theos, and like as the land of Aigyptos until coming into Zogora.
13:11 And Lot chose to himself all the district around the Iordanés. And Lot departed away [towards the] east. And they were separated, each from his brother.
13:12 And Abram settled in [the] land of Chanaán. And Lot settled in the neighboring city, and he dwelt in Sodoma.
13:13 But the humans in Sodoma [were] evil, and exceedingly sinful before the Theos.
13:14 And the Theos said to Abram, after Lot parted from him: “Look up [with] your eyes, and behold from the place where you are now towards [the] north, and south, and east, and west,
13:15 that all the land which you see, I will give it to you and your seed, unto the aeon.
13:16 And I will make your seed as the sand of the earth. If anyone is able to count out the sand of the earth, then they shall count out your seed.
13:17 Rising up, you travel through the land, both into the length of it and into the breadth, for I shall give it to you and your seed, into the aeon.
13:18 And Abram having come, dwelt around the oak of Mambre, which was in Chebrom. And there he built an altar to the lord.
14:1 And it came to pass in the reign of Amarphal, king of Sennaár, and Arioch, king of Ellasar, [that] Chodollogomor, king of Elam, and Thargal, king of nations,
14:2 made war with Balla, king of Sodoma, and with Barsa, king of Gomorra, and with Sennaàr, king of Adama, and with Symobor, king of Seboïm, and the king of Balak; this is Segor.
14:3 All these agreed together [to meet] upon the salty valley; this [is now] the sea of salts.
14:4 Twelve years, they served Chodollogomor, but in the thirteenth year, they revolted.
14:5 And in the fourteenth year came Chodollogomor, and the kings with him. And they cut to pieces the giants, of the [ones] in Astaroth, and Karnaïn, and strong nations together with them, and the Ommaious in the city Save,
14:6 and the Chorraious in the mountains of Seéir, unto the turpentine tree of Pharan, which is in the desolate.
14:7 And returning, they came upon the spring of judgment; this is Kades. And they cut in pieces all the rulers of Amalek, and the Amorraious, of the ones dwelling in Asasonthamar.
14:8 And [the] king of Sodoma came forth, and [the] king of Gomorra, and [the] king of Adama, and [the] king of Seboïm, and [the] king of Balak; this is Segor. And they deployed themselves into war in the salty valley
14:9 against Chodollogomor, king of Elam, and Thargal, king of nations, and Amarphal, king of Sennaár, and Arioch, king of Ellasar: the four kings against the five.
14:10 Now the salty valley [had] wells of pitch. And [the] king of Sodoma fled, and [the] king of Gomorra. And they fell in there. And the ones being left behind fled into the mountainous area.
14:11 And they took all the horses of Sodoma and Gomorra, and all their foods, and departed.
14:12 And they took also Lot, the son of the brother of Abram, and his belongings, and departed, for he was dwelling in Sodoma.
14:13 And someone of the ones being rescued coming reported to the traveler Abram. And he dwelt towards the oak of [the] Amorite Mambre, the brother of Eschol, and the brother of Aunan, who were confederates of Abram.
14:14 And Abram having heard that Lot, the [son] of his brother, has been taken captive, counted out his own native-born [servants]: three hundred ten and eight. And he pursued [after them] unto Dan.
14:15 And he came upon them at night, he and his manservants. And he struck them, and pursued them unto Choba, which is in [the] left of Damaskos.
14:16 And he restored all the horses of Sodoma, and he turned back Lot, the [son] of his brother, and all his possessions, and the wives, and the people.
14:17 And [the] king of Sodoma came forth to meet him, after he returned from the slaughter of Chodollogomor, and the kings with him, to the valley of Saby; this was the plain of [the] king.
14:18 And Melchisedek, king of Salem, brought forth bread loaves and wine. And he was priest of the highest Theos.
14:19 And he blessed Abram, and said: “A blessing [is] Abram to the highest Theos, who created the heaven and the earth.
14:20 And blessed [be] the highest Theos who delivered up your enemies under your hands to you.” And Abram gave him a tenth from all.
14:21 And [the] king of Sodoma said to Abram: “Give to me the men, but take to yourself the horses.”
14:22 And Abram said to the king of Sodoma: “I will stretch out my hand to [the] highest lord Theos, who created the heaven and the earth,
14:23 [that] I will [not] take from [the] string unto [the] knob [of the] shoe from all of your [goods], that you should not have said that I enriched Abram.
14:24 Except what the young [men] ate, and the portion of the men of the [ones] going with me: Eschol, Aunan, Mambre; these will take for themselves a portion.
15:1 After these words the word of [the] lord came towards Abram in a vision, saying: “Fear not, Abram, I will shield you. Your wage will be exceedingly much.”
15:2 And Abram says: “Master lord, what will you give to me, whereas I am departing childless, but the son of my native-born female slave Masek, this Eliézer of Damaskos [is my heir].”
15:3 And Abram said: “Since to me you gave no seed, my native-born [servant] will be heir to me.
15:4 And immediately [the] voice of [the] lord came to him, saying: “This one will not be heir to you. Another will come forth from out of you: this [one] will be heir to you.”
15:5 And he led him outside, and said to him: “Now look up to heaven, and count the stars, if you are be able to count them.” And he said: “Thus will be your seed.”
15:6 And Abram trusted the Theos, and it was concluded him [to be] into righteousness.
15:7 And he said to him: “I [am] the Theos, the [one] leading you from out of [the] region of the Chaldaion, so as to give to you this land to inherit.”
15:8 And he said: “Master lord, how will I know that I will inherit it?”
15:9 And he said to him: “Take for me a heifer being three years old, and a goat being three years old, and a ram being three years old, and a turledove and a pigeon.”
15:10 And he took to himself all these. And he divided them in the middle. And he placed them facing one other. But the birds he did not divide.
15:11 And birds came down upon the bodies, upon the divided parts of them. And Abram sat down with them.
15:12 And around [the] descent of Helios a trance fell upon Abram. And behold: a great dark fear fell upon him.
15:13 And it was said to Abram: “[In] knowing you will know that your seed will be a sojourner in a land not [their] own. And they will enslave them, and will afflict them, and humble them, four hundred years.
15:14 And I will judge the nation whichever they may be slave to. And after this, they shall come forth to here with much belongings.
15:15 But you shall depart to your fathers with peace, being buried in a good old age.
15:16 And [the] fourth generation shall return to here, for the sins of the Amorraion have not yet been filled up unto the present.”
15:17 And when the Helios was in descent, a flame came, and behold: a smoking oven and lamps of fire, which went through in the midst of these pieces.
15:18 In that day [the] lord made a covenant with Abram, saying: “[To] your seed I will give this land, from the river of Aigyptos to the river of the great Euphrates, [including]
15:19 the Kenaion, and the Kenezaion, and the Kedmonaion,
15:20 and the Chettaion, and the Pherezaion, and the Raphaeim,
15:21 and the Amorraion, and the Chana¬naion, and the Evaion, and the Gergesaion, and the Iebousaion.
16:1 And Sara, the woman of Abram, bore not to him. But there was to her a maidservant, an Aigyptia, whose name [was] Agar.
16:2 And Sara said towards Abram: “Behold: [the] lord has closed me up to not bear. Enter then towards my maidservant, that I may produce children from her.” And Abram hearkened [to] the voice of Sara.
16:3 So Sara, the wife of Abram, having taken Agar the Egyptian, her maidservant, after ten years of dwelling with Abram in [the] land of Chanaán, she gave her [to] Abram, her husband, as a wife to him.
16:4 And he entered towards Agar, and she conceived. And she saw that she had [a child] in [the] womb. And the lady was dishonored before her.
16:5 And Sara said towards Abram: “I am harmed from out of you. I gave my maidservant into your bosom. And seeing that she had [a child] in [the] womb, I was dishonored before her. May the Theos judge between me and you.”
16:6 And Abram said to Sara: “Behold: your maidservant [is] in your hands, use her however is acceptable to you.” And Sara maltreated her. And she ran away from her face.
16:7 And [a] messenger of [the] lord found her upon the fountain of water in the desolate, upon the fountain in the way to Sour.
16:8 And the messenger of [the] lord said to her: “Agar, maidservant of Sara, from what place [do] you come, and where [do] you go?”And she said: “I am running away from [the] face of my lady Sara.”
16:9 And the messenger of [the] lord said to her: “Return to your lady, and be humble under her hands.”
16:10 And the messenger of [the] lord said to her: “[In] multiplying I will multiply your seed, and it shall not be numbered away from the multitude.”
16:11 And the messenger of [the] lord said to her: “Behold: you have [a child] in [the] womb, and you shall bear a son, and you shall call his name Ismaél, for [the] lord has hearkened to your humiliation.
16:12 This one will be a rugged human. His hands [will be] upon all, and the hands of all upon him. And he will dwell against [the] face of all his brothers.”
16:13 And she called [the] name of [the] lord, the [one] speaking to her: “You, the Theos, the [one] looking upon me”, for she said: “And I beheld indeed in the presence of the [one] appearing to me.”
16:14 On account of this, she called the well: [the] well that I beheld in [his] presence. Behold: [it is] between Kades and between Barad.
16:15 And Agar bore to Abram a son. And Abram called the name of his son, whom Agar bore to him, Ismaél.
16:16 And Abram was eighty-six years [old] when Agar bore Ismaél to Abram.
17:1 And Abram was ninety-nine years, and [the] lord appeared to Abram, and he said to him: “I am your Theos. Be well-pleasing before me, and be blameless.
17:2 And I will establish my covenant between me and between you. And I will multiply you exceedingly.”
17:3 And Abram fell upon his face. And the Theos spoke to him, saying:
17:4 “And I make, behold, my covenant with you. And you will be father of a multitude of nations.
17:5 And your name will not any longer be called Abram, but your name will be Abraám, for I have appointed you father of many nations.
17:6 And I will increase you exceedingly exceedingly. And I will establish you into nations. And kings will come forth from out of you.
17:7 And I will establish my covenant between you and your seed after you, into their generations, into an aeonial covenant, to be your Theos, and [with] your seed after you.
17:8 And I will give to you and to your seed after you the land wherein you sojourn: all the land of Chanaán into an aeonial possession. And I will be to them into Theos.”
17:9 And the Theos said to Abraám: “But you shall keep carefully my covenant, you and your seed after you into their generations.
17:10 And this [is] the covenant which you shall keep carefully, between me and you, and between your seed after you. Every male shall be cut off all-around to you.
17:11 And you shall be circumcised of the flesh of your foreskin. And it will be for a sign of covenant between me and you.
17:12 And an infant [of] eight days [old] shall be circumcised by you, every male into your generations: the native-born [servant] of your house, and the [one] bought with silver, from every son of a stranger who is not of your seed.
17:13 By circumcision, he shall be circumcised, the native-born [servant] of your house, and the [one] bought with silver. And my covenant will be upon your flesh into an aeonial covenant.
17:14 And [the] uncircumcised male who shall not be circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin in the eighth day, that soul shall be utterly destroyed from its family, for he effaced my covenant.
17:15 And the Theos said to Abraám: “Your wife Sara, her name shall not be called Sara, yet Sarra will be her name.
17:16 And I will bless her, and give to you from her a child. And I will bless it, and it will be into nations. And kings of nations will be from him.
17:17 And Abraám fell upon his face, and laughed. And he said in his mind, saying: “Shall to the centenarian be a son? And shall Sarra at ninety years bear?”
17:18 And Abraám said to the Theos: “Let Ismaél, this one, let him live before you.”
17:19 And the Theos said to Abraám: “Yes, behold, your wife Sarra shall bear to you a son. And you shall call his name Isaák. And I will establish my covenant with him into an aeonial covenant, to be Theos to him, and to his seed after him.
17:20 And concerning Ismaél, behold: I heeded you. And behold: I will bless him, and I will increase him, and I will multiply him exceedingly. He will beget twelve nations. And I will make him into [a] great nation.
17:21 Moreover, I will establish yet my covenant with Isaák, whom Sarra shall bear to you at this time in the other year.
17:22 And he completed speaking towards him. And the Theos ascended away from Abraám.
17:23 And Abraám took his son Ismaél, and all his native-born [servants], and all the [ones] bought with silver, and every male of the men in the house of Abraám. And he circumcised their foreskins in that time of the day, as the Theos spoke to him.
17:24 And Abraám was ninety-nine years when he circumcised the flesh of his foreskin.
17:25 And his son Ismaél was thirteen years when he circumcised the flesh of his foreskin.
17:26 In that time of the day, Abraám was circumcised, and his son Ismaél.
17:27 And all the men of his house, and the native-born [servants], and the [ones] bought with silver from foreign nations, he circumcised them.
18:1 And the Theos appeared to him by the oak of Mambre, as he sat upon the door of his tent [at] noon.
18:2 And lifting up his eyes he saw, and behold: three men stood above him. And seeing, he ran up to meet them, away from the door of his tent. And he did obeisance upon the ground.
18:3 And he said: “Lord, that since I found favor before you, you should not go by your servant.
18:4 Let there now be taken water, and let them wash your feet, and be cooled under the tree.
18:5 And I will bring bread, and you shall eat. And after this you shall depart into your journey, because of which you turned aside to your servant.” And they said: “Thus do as you have said.”
18:6 And Abraám hastened to the tent towards Sarra. And he said to her: “Hasten, and mix up three measures of fine wheat flour, and make a cake baked in hot ashes.
18:7 And Abraám ran to the oxen, and took a tender and good young calf, and gave [it] to the servant, and he hastened to prepare it.
18:8 And he took butter and milk, and the young calf which he prepared, and placed it near to them, and they ate. And he stood beside them under the tree.
18:9 And he said to him: “Where [is] your wife Sarra?” And answering he said: “Behold: in the tent.”
18:10 And he said: “Returning, I will come to you according to this time into [the] hour, and your wife Sarra will have a son. And Sarra heard towards the door of the tent, being behind him.
18:11 And Abraám and Sarra [were] elders, advanced of days. And Sarra ceased to be in the feminine [way].
18:12 And Sarra laughed in herself, saying: “For not yet has it happened to me until now, and my lord [is an] elder.
18:13 And [the] lord said to Abraám: “Why [is it] that Sarra laughed in herself, saying: Is it indeed truly [that] I will bear? But I have grown old!
18:14 [Is the] saying impossible to [the] lord? At this time into [the] hour I will return to you, and there will be to Sarra a son.”
18:15 But Sarra denied, saying: “I did not laugh”, for she feared. And he said to her: “No, on the contrary, you laughed.”
18:16 And having risen up from there, the men looked down upon Sodoma and Gomorra. And Abraám went with them, escorting them.
18:17 And the lord said: “No way shall I hide from my servant Abraám what I do.”
18:18 But Abraám having come into being, he will be into a great and populous nation. And all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him.
18:19 For I know that he will order his sons, and his house after him. And they will guard the ways of [the] lord, to do righteousness and judgment, that [the] lord may bring upon Abraám all as much as he said towards him.
18:20 And [the] lord said: “[The] cry of Sodoma and Gomorra towards me has increased, and their sins [are] very much.
18:21 Going down then, I will see if [it is] according to their cry, the [one] coming to me, [that] they culminate; and if not, that I may know.”
18:22 And turning back from there, the men came into Sodoma. And Abraám was still standing before [the] lord.
18:23 And Abraám approaching, said: “Would you not destroy together [the] righteous with [the] ungodly, and will the righteous be as the ungodly?
18:24 If there might be fifty righteous in the city, wilt you destroy them? Will you not spare the whole place for the sake of the fifty righteous, if there should be [so] in it?
18:25 By no means shall you do as this saying: to kill [the] righteous with [the] ungodly, so the righteous shall be as the ungodly; by no means, the [one] judging the whole earth! Will you not execute judgment?”
18:26 And [the] lord said: “If there should be in Sodoma fifty righteous in the city, I will leave off [doing so to] the whole place on account of them.”
18:27 And Abraám responding said: “Now [that] I began to speak to my lord, yet I am [solely] earth and ashes:
18:28 But if the fifty righteous should be lessened to forty-five, will you destroy the whole city because of the five [lacking]?” And he said: “No way will I destroy [it] if I find there forty-five.”
18:29 And he added yet to speak to him. And he said: “But if [there] may be found there forty?” And he said: “No way will I destroy [it] for the sake of the forty.”
18:30 And he said: “Perchance, lord, if I may speak: But if [there] may be found there thirty?” And he said: “No way will I destroy [it] for the sake of the thirty.
18:31 And he said: “Since I have [taken] to speak to the lord: But if [there] may be found there twenty?” And he said: “No way will I destroy [it] if I should find there twenty.”
18:32 And he said: “Perchance, lord, if I may speak, still once [more]: But if [there] may be found there ten?” And he said: “No way will I destroy [it] for the sake of the ten.”
18:33 And [the] lord departed as he ceased speaking to Abraám. And Abraám returned to his place.
19:1 And the two messengers came into Sodoma [at] evening. And Lot sat by the gate of Sodoma. And seeing, Lot rose up to meet them, and he worshipped [with his] face up the ground.
19:2 And he said: “Behold, lords, turn aside to the house of your servant, and rest up, and wash your feet, and rising early you may go forth into your way.” And they said: “No, instead we will lodge in the street.”
19:3 And he constrained them, and they turned aside towards him, and they entered into his house. And he made drinking-bout a feast for them, and he baked unleavened [cakes] for them, and they ate.
19:4 Before putting to bed, the men of the city, the Sodomites, surrounded the house, from young unto elder, all the people together.
19:5 And they called forth Lot. And they said to him: “Where are they, the men, the ones entering towards you [this] night? Lead them towards us that we may be intimate with them.”
19:6 And Lot came forth towards them, to the threshold, and he shut the door behind him.
19:7 And he said to them: “By no means, brothers, should you do wickedly.
19:8 But there are two daughters to me, who have not known a man. I will lead them towards you, and you treat them as pleases you. Only to these men, you should not do unjust, because they entered under the protection of my beams.”
19:9 And they said to him: “You left there to enter [here] to sojourn, and not to judge [with] judgment. Now then, to you we will inflict harm rather [than] them.” And they were pressing the man Lot exceedingly, and approached to break the door.
19:10 And the men stretching out the hands, drew Lot towards themselves into the house. And they locked the door of the house.
19:11 And the men being at the door of the house were struck with inability to see, from small unto great, and they were disabled [in] seeking the door.
19:12 And the men said to Lot: “Are here in-laws to you, or sons or daughters? Or if there is any other to you in the city, you lead [them] out of this place.
19:13 For we destroy this place. For their cry was raised up high before [the] lord, and [the] lord sent us to obliterate it.
19:14 And Lot went forth, and spoke to his sons-in-law, the ones taking his daughters. And he said: “Rise up, and come forth from out of this place, for [the] lord is obliterating the city.” But he seemed to be speaking absurdly before his sons-in-law.
19:15 And when dawn came, the messengers hurried Lot, saying: “In rising up, take your wife and your two daughters whom you have, and come forth, so that you should not also be destroyed in the lawlessnesses of the city.”
19:16 And they were disturbed, and the messengers held his hand, and the hand of his wife, and the hands of his two daughters, in the lord sparing him.
19:17 And it came to pass when they led them outside, that they said: “By saving, save your own soul. You should not look around into the rear, nor stand in any surrounding region. Escape into the mountain, lest at any time you may be taken along with [them].”
19:18 And Lot said to them: “I beseech, lord,
19:19 since your servant found favor before you, and you magnified your righteousness, which you do upon me, that my soul may live. But I will not be able to come through safe into the mountain, lest evils overtake me and I die.
19:20 Behold: this city [is] near for me to take refuge there, which is little, and there I will be delivered. Is it not little that my soul will live because of you?”
19:21 And he said to him: “Behold: I wondered [about] your face over this saying [that] I should not eradicate the city concerning of which you spoke.
19:22 You hasten then to escape there, for I will not be able to do [the] thing until you go there. On account of this he called the name of that city, Segor.
19:23 The Helios came [up] upon the earth, and Lot entered into Segor.
19:24 And [the] lord rained upon Sodoma and Gomorra sulphur and fire from beside [the] lord, from out of heaven.
19:25 And he overthrew these cities, and all the place round about, and all the ones dwelling in the cities, and the [growing] rising from out of the ground.
19:26 And his woman looked into the rear, and she became a pillar of salt.
19:27 And Abraám rose early in the morning into the place of which he had stood before [the] lord.
19:28 And he looked upon [the] face of Sodoma and Gomorra, and upon [the] face of the place round about. And he saw. And behold: a flame ascended from out of the earth, as vapor of a furnace.
19:29 And it came to pass in the Theos obliterating all the adjacent cities, [that] the Theos remembered Abraám. And he sent out Lot from out of the middle of the overthrowing, in overthrowing the cities in which Lot dwelt in them.
19:30 And Lot came forth from out of Segor, and sat down in the mountain, and his two daughters with him, for he feared dwelling in Segor. And he dwelt in the cave, he and his two daughters with him.
19:31 And the elder said to the younger: “Our father [is] elder, and [there] is no one upon the land who will enter towards us, as it is fit in all the earth.
19:32 Come and we should give our father to drink wine, and we should go to bed with him, and we might raise up seed from our father.”
19:33 So they gave their father to drink wine in that night. And entering, the elder went to bed with her father in that night. And he knew not of his going to bed and rising up.
19:34 And it came to pass in the next day, [that] the elder said to the younger: “Behold: I went to bed yesterday with our father. We should give him to drink wine in this night also. And entering, you go to bed with him, [that] we might raise up seed from our father.”
19:35 So they gave their father wine to drink also in that night. And entering, the younger went to bed with her father. And he knew not in him going to bed and rising up.
19:36 And the two daughters of Lot conceived from their father.
19:37 And the elder bore a son and called his name Moab, saying: “[He is] from my father.” This [one is the] father of [the] Moabites unto today’s day.
19:38 And the younger also bore a son, and called his name Amman, saying: “[He is a] son of my family.” This [one is the] father of [the] Ammanites unto today’s day.
20:1 And Abraám moved from there into [the] land towards [the] south, and dwelt between Kades and between Sour, and sojourned in Gerara.
20:2 And Abraám said concerning his wife Sarra: “She is my sister”, for he feared to say that she is my wife, lest at any time the men of the city should kill him on account of her. So Abimelech, king of Gerara, sent and took Sarra.
20:3 And the Theos entered to Abimelech in sleep by night. And he said: “Behold: you die concerning the woman whom you took, for she is living with a man.”
20:4 But Abimelech had not touched her. And he said: “Lord, will you destroy an ignorantly [sinning] and just nation?
20:5 Said not he to me ‘She is my sister’, and said she to me ‘He is my brother’? In a clean heart and in the righteousness of hands, I did this.”
20:6 And the Theos said to him during sleep: “And I knew that you did this with a clean heart, and I spared you [for] you not to sin against me. Because of this I did not let you to touch her.
20:7 So now return his wife of the human, for he is a prophet, and he will pray concerning you, and you shall live. But if [you do] not give back, you shall know that you shall die, you and all yours.”
20:8 And Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants. And he spoke all these words into their ears. And all the humans feared exceedingly.
20:9 And Abimelech called Abraám and said to him: “What [is] this you did to us, unless we did wrong into you, that you bring upon me and upon my kingdom a great sin? A deed which no one ought to do, you have done to me.”
20:10 And Abimelech said to Abraám: “What seeing did you do this?”
20:11 And Abraám said: “For I said: Surely there is no devotion to the Theos in this place, and they will slay me because of my wife.
20:12 For also truly she is my sister from [my] father, but not from [my] mother, and she became to me into wife.
20:13 And it came to pass when the Theos led me from out of the house of my father, that I said to her: This righteousness you shall do for me in every place of which ever I enter, there you say of me that he is my brother.”
20:14 And Abimelech took a thousand double-drachmas, and sheep, and calves, and manservants, and maidservants, and gave [this] to Abraám. And he returned to him his wife Sarra.
20:15 And Abimelech said to Abraám: “Behold: my land [is] before you. Dwell wheresoever it may please you.”
20:16 And [to] Sarra he said: “Behold: I have given a thousand double-drachmas to your brother. These will be to you for the price of your face, and all the [ones] with you. And you be truthful [in] all [things].
20:17 And Abraám prayed to the Theos. And the Theos healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants. And they bore.
20:18 For in closing up, [the] lord closed up from outside every womb in the house of Abimelech, because of Abraám’s wife Sarra.
21:1 And [the] lord visited Sarra, as he said. And [the] Lord did to Sarra, as he spoke.
21:2 And conceiving, she bore to Abraám a son in old age, at the set time according as [the] lord spoke to him.
21:3 And Abraám called the name of his son, the [one] born to him, whom Sarra bore to him, Isaák.
21:4 And Abraám circumcised Isaák on the eighth day, as the Theos commanded him.
21:5 And Abraám was a hundred years when his son Isaák was born to him.
21:6 And Sarra said: “[The] lord caused laughter to me, for whoever may hear will rejoice along with me.”
21:7 And she said: “Who will announce to Abraám that Sarra suckles a child? For I bore a son in my old age.”
21:8 And the child grew and was weaned. And Abraám made a great banquet the day his son Isaák was weaned.
21:9 And Sarra beholding the son of Agar the Aigyptia, who was born [to] Abraám, playing with her son Isaák,
21:10 that she said to Abraám: “You cast out this maidservant and her son, for the son of the maidservant shall not inherit with my son Isaák.”
21:11 But the saying appeared very much before Abraám concerning his son.
21:12 But the Theos said to Abraám: “Let it not be hard before you concerning the child, and concerning the maidservant. All as much as Sarra says to you, you hearken to her voice, for in Isaák a seed shall be called to you.
21:13 And moreover, I will make the son of this maidservant into a great nation, for he is your seed.”
21:14 And Abraám rose up in the morning, and took bread loaves and a leather bag of water, and he gave [this] to Agar. And he placed the child upon her shoulder, and sent her forth. And she went forth wandering about in the desolate down the well of the oath.
21:15 But the water ceased [coming] from out of the leather bag. And she cast the child underneath one fir tree.
21:16 And going forth, she sat down over against him, far off as a bow-shot, for she said: “No way shall I see the death of my child.” And she sat over against him. And yelling out, the child wept.
21:17 But the Theos heard the voice of the child from the place where he was. And Theos’ messenger called Agar from out of the heaven, and said to her: “What is it, Agar? Fear not, for the Theos has heard the voice of the child from the place where he is.
21:18 Rise up, and take the child, and hold him in your hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”
21:19 And the Theos opened her eyes. And she saw a well of living water. And she went and filled the leather bag of water, and gave a drink to the child.
21:20 And the Theos was with the child. And he grew, and dwelt in the desolate. And he became a bowman.
21:21 And he dwelt in the desolate in Pharan. And [his] mother took to him a wife from out of [the] land of Aigyptos.
21:22 And it came to pass in that time that Abimelech and his groomsman Ochozath and the commander-in-chief of his force Phichol spoke to Abraám, saying: “The Theos [is] with you in all [things], whatsoever you should do.
21:23 Now then swear by an oath to me [by] the Theos [that you will] not harm me, nor my seed, nor my name. But according to the righteousness [to] which I did with you, you shall do with me, and with the land where you sojourned in it.”
21:24 And Abraám said: “I will swear by an oath.”
21:25 And Abraám reproved Abimelech because of the wells of water, which the servants of Abimelech took away.
21:26 And Abimelech said to him: “I do not know who did this matter, nor you reported [it] me, nor I heard [of it], but only today.”
21:27 And Abraám took sheep and calves, and gave [this] to Abimelech. And both made a covenant.
21:28 And Abraám set seven ewe-lambs of sheep alone.
21:29 And Abimelech said to Abraám: “What are the seven ewe-lambs of sheep, these which you set alone?”
21:30 And Abraám said: “You shall receive the seven ewe-lambs of mine, that they should be for me into a witness that I dug this well.”
21:31 Through this the name of that place was named well of [the] oath, for there both swore by an oath.
21:32 And they made a covenant at the well of the oath. And Abimelech rose up, and his groomsman Ochozath and Phichol, the commander-in-chief of his force, and they returned into the land of the Phylistieim.
21:33 And Abraám planted plowed fields upon the well of the oath. And he called there upon on the name of [the] lord, [the] aeonial Theos.
21:34 And Abraám sojourned in the land of the Phylistieim [for] many days.
22:1 And it came to pass after these words [that] the Theos tested Abraám, and said to him: “Abraám, Abraám”. And he said: “Behold: I [am here]”.
22:2 And he said: “Take your son, the beloved [one], whom you loved: Isaák. And go into the high land, and offer him there into a whole-burnt-yield upon [and] in [one] of the mountains, whichever I may tell you.
22:3 And Abraám rising up in the morning, saddled his donkey, and he took with himself two servants, and his son Isaák. And splitting wood into a whole-burnt-yield, and rising up to go, they came upon the place [of] which the Theos spoke to him,
22:4 on the third day. And Abraám looking up [with] his eyes, saw the place far off.
22:5 And Abraám said to his servants: “You sit there with the donkey, and I and the lad will proceed unto here. And doing obeisance, we will return to you.
22:6 And Abraám took the wood [for] the whole-burnt-yield, and placed it upon his son Isaák. And he took with [his] hands the fire and the knife. And the two went together.
22:7 And Isaák said to his father Abraám: “Father”. And he said: “What is it, child?” And he said: “Behold: the fire and the wood, [but] where is the sheep, the [one] into [the] whole-burnt-yield?”
22:8 And Abraám said: “The Theos will see to himself a sheep for a whole-burnt-yield, [my] child.” And both going together
22:9 came upon the place which the Theos spoke [of] to him. And there Abraám built the altar. And he placed the wood upon [it]. And binding his son Isaák hand and foot, he placed him upon the altar above the wood.
22:10 And Abraám stretched his hand to take the knife to slay his son.
22:11 And [a] messenger of [the] lord called him from out of the heaven, and said: “Abraám, Abraám”. And he said: “Behold: I [am here].”
22:12 And he said: “Put not your hand upon the lad, nor should you do [anything] to him by any means, for now I know that you fear the Theos, and spared not your beloved son on account of me.”
22:13 And Abraám looking up [with] his eyes saw. And behold: one ram being held in a plant of Sabek by his horns. And Abraám went and took the ram, and offered it into a whole-burnt-yield instead of his son Isaák.
22:14 And Abraám called the name of that place: [the] lord beheld, that they may say today: “[The] lord was seen in the mountain.”
22:15 And [the] messenger of [the] lord called Abraám a second [time] from out of heaven, saying:
22:16 “Against myself I swear by an oath, says [the] lord, because you did this saying, and you did not spare your beloved son on account of me.
22:17 Assuredly in blessing, I will bless you. And in multiplying, I will multiply your seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand, the [one] by the lip of the sea. And your seed will inherit the cities of [your] opposite.
22:18 And all the nations of the earth will be blessed in your seed, because you hearkened to my voice.”
22:19 And Abraám returned to his servants. And rising up the went together to the well of the oath. And Abraám dwelt upon the well of the oath.
22:20 And it came to pass after these words, that it was announced to Abraám, saying: “Behold: also Melcha herself has born sons to your brother Nachor:
22:21 the first-born Ouz, and his brother Baux, and Kamouél, [the] father of [the] Syron,
22:22 and Chazad, and Azav, and Phaldes, and Ieldaph, and Bathouél.”
22:23 And Bathouél begot Rebekka. These [are the] eight sons whom Melcha bore to Nachor, the brother of Abraám.
22:24 And his concubine, whose name [was] Rheuma, also bore herself: Tabek, and Taám, and Tochos, and Mocha.
23:1 And the life [of] Sarra was a hundred twenty-seven years.
23:2 And Sarra died in the city of Arbok, which is in the hollow: This is Chebron in the land of Chanaán. And Abraám came to lament for Sarra, and to mourn.
23:3 And Abraám rose up, away from his dead. And Abraám spoke to the sons of Chet, saying:
23:4 “I am a sojourner and a stranger among you. Give then to me [the] possession of a burying-place among you. And I will bury my dead away from me.”
23:5 And the sons of Chet answered to Abraám, saying: “No, lord,
23:6 but hear us: you are among us [as a] king beside Theos. You bury your dead in our favorite sepulchers, for not one of us will in any way withhold his sepulcher from you to bury your dead there.
23:7 And rising up, Abraám did obeisance to the people of the land, to the sons of Chet.
23:8 And Abraám spoke to them, saying: “If you have it in your soul so as to bury my dead, away from my face, [then] hearken to me, and speak about me to Ephron, the [son] of Saár.
23:9 And let him give to me the double cave which is his, the [one] being in a part of his field. Let him give it to me [for its] worth of silver for a possession of a sepulcher among you.
23:10 Now Ephron was sitting in [the] midst of the sons of Chet. And responding, Ephron the Chettaios spoke to Abraám in the hearing of the sons of Chet, and of all the [ones] entering into the city, saying:
23:11 “By me, let it be, lord, and hear me: I give to you the field and the cave in it. Before all of my fellow-countrymen, I have given [it] to you. You bury [there] your dead.”
23:12 And Abraám did obeisance before the people of the land.
23:13 And he said in the ears of Ephron before the people of the land: “Since you are with me, hear me. You take from me the silver for the field. And I will bury my dead there.”
23:14 But Ephron answered Abraám, saying:
23:15 “Not so, lord, for I heard [it is worth] four hundred didrachmas of silver. However, what could this be between me and you? But you, bury your dead.”
23:16 And Abraám hearkened to Ephron. And Abraám restored [to] Ephron the silver, which he spoke into the ears of the sons of Chet: four hundred didrachmas of silver approved [by] merchants.
23:17 And the field which is of Ephron was in the double cave, which is against [the] face of Mambre. The field and the cave which was in it, and every tree which was in the field, and all which is in [its] borders round about,
23:18 [became to] Abraám into a possession, before the sons of Chet, and all the [ones] entering into the city.
23:19 After all this, Abraám buried his wife Sarra in the cave of the field [of] the double, which is over against Mambre: This is Chebron in the land of Chanaán.
23:20 And the field was validated, and the cave which was in it, [to] Abraám into [the] possession of a burial-place by the sons of Chet.
24:1 And Abraám was [an] elder, advancing of days. And [the] lord blessed Abraám over against [it] all.
24:2 And Abraám said [to] his servant, to the elder of his house, to the one in charge of all his [things]: “Put your hand under my thigh,
24:3 and I will adjure you [by the] lord, the Theos of the heaven, and the Theos of the earth, that you take not a wife [to] my son Isaák from the daughters of the Chananaion, with whom I dwell, in the midst of them.
24:4 But you shall go instead to my land, of which I was, and into my tribe. And you shall take from thence a wife [to] my son Isaák.”
24:5 And the servant said to him: “If at any time the woman does not want to go with me back into this land, shall I return your son into the land from where you came forth from there?”
24:6 And Abraám said to him: “Pay yourself attention [that you] not return my son there.
24:7 [The] lord, the Theos of [the] heaven, and the Theos of the earth, who took me from out of my father’s house, and from out of the land of which I was born, who spoke to me, and who swore by an oath to me, saying: ‘I will give this land to you and your seed.’ He will send his messenger in front of you. And you shall take a wife [to] my son from there.
24:8 And if the woman should not want to go with you into this land, you will be clean from this oath. Only return not my son there.”
24:9 And the servant put his hand under the thigh of his lord Abraám. And swore by an oath to him concerning this saying.
24:10 And the servant took ten camels from the camels of his lord, and from all the good [things] of his lord with himself. And rising up, he went into Mesopotamia, into the city of Nachor.
24:11 And he rested the camels outside the city by the well of the water towards late [in the day], when the [young women] came forth drawing water.
24:12 And he said: “Lord, the Theos of my lord Abraám, prosper my way before me to day, and perform mercy with my lord Abraám.
24:13 Behold: I stand upon the spring of water, and the daughters of the humans dwelling in the city come forth to draw water.
24:14 And it shall be the virgin whoever I should have said: ‘Incline your water-pot, that I might drink’. And she shall say: ‘You drink, and I will give your camels to drink, until whenever they cease to drink’. This one you prepared for your girl to Isaák. And in this I will know that you executed mercy with my lord Abraám.”
24:15 And it came to pass before completing his speaking in his mind, that behold: Rebekka came forth, the [one] born to Bathouél, [the] son of Melcha, the wife of Nachor, and brother of Abraám, having a water-pot upon her shoulders.
24:16 And the virgin was exceedingly good in appearance. She was a virgin: no man knew her. And coming upon the spring, she filled her water-pot, and ascended.
24:17 And the servant ran to meet with her, and said: “Give me a little water to drink from out of your water-pot.”
24:18 And she said: “Drink, lord.” And she hastened, and lowered the water-pot upon her arm, and gave him to drink, until he ceased drinking.
24:19 And she said: “I will also draw water for your camels, until whenever all should have drunk.”
24:20 And she hastened, and emptied the water-pot into the channel, and ran yet [again] upon the well to draw water. And she drew water for all the camels.
24:21 And the human observed her, and remained silent to know if [the] lord prospered his way or not.
24:22 And it came to pass when all the camels ceased drinking, [that] the human took golden earrings, [each worth] up to a drachma scale-weight, and two bracelets, [and put them] on her hands: ten golden [shekels] [being] their scale-weight.
24:23 And he asked her, and said: “Whose daughter are you? Announce to me if there is place for us to lodge by your father.”
24:24 And she said to him: “I am [the] daughter of Bathouél, the [son] of Melcha, whom she bore to Nachor.”
24:25 And she said to him: “Also [there is] much straw and fodder, and place to lodge.”
24:26 And the human being well-pleased did obeisance the lord, and said:
24:27 “Blessed be [the] lord, the Theos of my lord Abraám, who abandoned not righteousness and truth from my lord. [The] lord indeed prospered me into [the] house of the brother of my lord.”
24:28 And running, the maidservant announced into the house to her mother according to these words.
24:29 And to Rebekka, there was a brother whose name [was] Laban. And Laban ran to the human, outside upon the spring.
24:30 And it came to pass when he saw the earrings, and the bracelets upon the hands of his sister, and when he heard the words of his sister Rebekka, saying: “So spoke the human to me”, that he went to the human, standing himself upon the camels upon the spring.
24:31 And he said to him: “Come, enter, [you] blessed of [the] lord. Why stand outside? For I prepared the house and a place for the camels.”
24:32 And the human entered into the house, and unharnessed the camels, and gave straw and fodder to the camels, and water for his feet, and for the feet of the men [being] with him.
24:33 And he placed before them bread loaves to eat. And he said: No way will I eat until speaking my words.” And he said: “Speak.”
24:34 And he said: “I am a servant of Abraám.
24:35 And [the] lord has blessed my lord exceedingly. And he was raised up high. And he gave to him sheep, and calves, and silver, and pieces of gold, and manservants, and maidservants, camels, and donkeys.
24:36 And Sarra, the wife of my lord, bore one son to my lord after his growing old. And he gave to him as much as was his.
24:37 And my lord made me swear, saying: ‘You shall not take a wife to my son from the daughters of the Chananaion, among whom I sojourn in their land.
24:38 But you should go into the house of my father, and into my tribe, and you shall take a wife to my son.’
24:39 And I said [to] my lord: ‘Perhaps the woman will not go with me.’
24:40 And he said to me: ‘[The] lord, the Theos to whom I was found well-pleasing before him, him will send out his messenger with you, and prosper your way. And you will take a wife to my son from out of my tribe, and from out of the house of my father.
24:41 Then you will be guiltless from my curse. For whenever you should come to my tribe, and they should not give her to you, then you will be guiltless away from my oath.’
24:42 And coming today upon the spring, I said: ‘Lord, the Theos of my lord Abraám, if you prosper my way in which I now go by it,
24:43 behold: I stand upon the spring of water, and the daughters of the humans of the city come forth to draw water. And it will be the virgin to whomever I should say: ‘Give me a little water to drink from out of your water-pot’,
24:44 and she should say to me: ‘You drink, and I will draw water to your camels’. This [shall be] the wife whom [the] lord prepared for his own attendant Isaák. And in this you will know that you have done mercy [to] my lord Abraám.
24:45 And it came to pass before completing my speaking in my mind, [that] straightway Rebekka came forth, having the water-pot upon her shoulders. And she went down upon the spring, and drew water. And I said to her: ‘Give me to drink.’
24:46 And she hastened and to lower the water-pot upon her arm from herself, and said: ‘You drink, and I will give your camels to drink.’ And I drank, and she gave the camels to drink.
24:47 And I asked her, and said: ‘Whose daughter are you?’ And she said: ‘I am [the] daughter of Bathouél, [the] son of Nachor, whom Melcha bore to him.’ And I put on her the earrings, and the bracelets around her hands.
24:48 And being well-pleased, I did obeisance to the lord. And I blessed the lord, the Theos of my lord Abraám, who prospered me in [the] way of truth, to take the daughter of the brother of my lord to his son.
24:49 If then you do mercy and righteousness towards my lord, announce to me that I might turn into [the] right or left.”
24:50 And answering Laban and Bathouél said: “This matter came forth from [the] lord. We will not be able to contradict bad or good.
24:51 Behold: Rebekka [is] before you. In taking her, run. And let her be wife to the son of your lord, as the lord spoke.”
24:52 And it came to pass when the servant of Abraám heard these words, [that] he did obeisance upon the ground to the lord.
24:53 And the servant brought forth equipment made of silver and gold. And he gave clothing to Rebekka. And he gave gifts to her brother, and to her mother.
24:54 And they ate and drank. And he and the men being with him went to sleep. And rising up [in the] morning, he said: “Send me forth, that I may go forth to my lord.”
24:55 And her brothers and mother said: “Let the virgin remain with us about ten days. And after this, she shall go forth.”
24:56 But he said to them: “Do not hold me, for [the] lord prospered my way. Send me forth, that I may go forth to my lord.”
24:57 And they said: “We should call the maidservant, and we should ask her mouth.”
24:58 And they called Rebekka, and said to her: “Will you go with this human?” And she said: “I will go.”
24:59 And they sent forth their sister Rebekka, and her goods, and the servant of Abraám, and the [ones] with him.
24:60 And they blessed Rebekka, and said to her: “You are our sister. Become into a thousand myriads, and let your seed inherit the cities of [your] adversary.”
24:61 And rising up, Rebekka and her handmaidens mounted upon the camels, and they went with the human. And taking the girl Rebekka, he went forth.
24:62 And Isaák was traveling through the desolate by the well of the vision. And he dwelt in the land towards [the] south.
24:63 And Isaák went forth into the plain towards evening to meditate. And looking up with his eyes, he saw camels coming.
24:64 And Rebekka looking up with her eyes, saw Isaák. And she leaped down from the camel.
24:65 And she said to the servant: “Who is that human going in the plain to meet us?” And the servant said: “This [is] my lord.” And she, having taken the lightweight covering, put it on.
24:66 And the servant related to Isaák all the words he did.
24:67 And Isaák entered into the house of his mother, and took Rebekka. And she became his wife. And he loved her. And Isaák was comforted concerning [the death of] his mother Sarra.
25:1 And Abraám added to take a wife, whose name [was] Chettoura.
25:2 And she bore to him Zombran, and Iezan, and Madal, and Madiam, and Iesbok, and Soyé.
25:3 And Iezan begot Thaiman, and Saba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Ragouél, and Nabdeél, and [the] Assourieim, and [the] Latousieim, and Laomeím.
25:4 And the sons of Madiam [were] Gephar and Apheír, and Enoch, and Abeira, and Eldaga. All these were sons of Chettoura.
25:5 But Abraám gave all his possessions to his son Isaák.
25:6 And to the sons of his concubines Abraám gave gifts. And he sent them away from his son Isaák, [while] he was still living towards [the] east, into [the] land of [the] east.
25:7 And these [were] the years of [the] days of the life of Abraám, as many as he lived, a hundred seventy-five years.
25:8 And failing, Abraám died in a good old age, an old man and full of days. And he was added to his people.
25:9 And his sons Isaák and Ismaél buried him in the double cave, in the field of Ephron, the [son] of Saár the Chettaion, which is over against Mambre.
25:10 [In] the field and the cave which Abraám acquired from the sons of Chet, there they buried Abraám and his wife Sarra.
25:11 And it came to pass after the dying of Abraám, [that] the Theos blessed his son Isaák. And Isaák dwelt by the well of the vision.
25:12 And these [are] the descents of Ismaél, the son of Abraám, whom Agar the Aigyptia, the maidservant of Sarra, bore to Abraám.
25:13 And these [are] the names of the sons of Ismaél, according to [the] names of their generations: Nabaioth, first-born of Ismaél, and Kedar, and Nabdeél, and Massam,
25:14 and Masma, and Douma, and Masse,
25:15 and Choddan, and Thaiman, and Ietour, and Naphes, and Kedma.
25:16 These [are] the sons of Ismaél, and these [are] their names in their tents, and in their dwellings: twelve rulers according to their nations.
25:17 And these [are] the years of the life of Ismaél: hundred thirty-seven years. And failing, he died. And he was added to his family.
25:18 And he dwelt from Evilat to Sour, which is against [the] face of Aigyptos, unto coming towards [the] Assyrious. He dwelt against [the] face of all his brothers.
25:19 And these [are] the descents of Isaák, the son of Abraám.
25:20 Abraám begot Isaák. And Isaák was forty years [old] when he took Rebekka, daughter of Bathuél the Syros, out of Syrian Mesopotamia of Syria, sister of Laban the Syros, to himself into wife.
25:21 And Isaák beseeched [the] lord concerning his wife Rebekka, because she was barren. And the Theos of him listened, and his wife Rebekka conceived in [the] womb.
25:22 And the babies leaped in her. And she said: “If thus is about to happen to me, why is this to me?” And she went to enquire of [the] lord.
25:23 And [the] lord said to her: “There are two nations in your womb. And two peoples from out of your belly will draw apart. And [one] people will rise above [the other] people. And the elder will be a servant to the younger.”
25:24 And the days were fulfilled for her to bear. And thus there were twins in her belly.
25:25 And the first-born came forth out entirely fiery red, and of hairy skin. And she named his name Esau.
25:26 And after this came forth his brother, and his hand took hold of the heel of Esau. And she called his name Iakob. And Isaák was sixty years [old] when Rebekka bore them.
25:27 And the young men grew. And Esau was a human skilled in hunting, [living] rugged. But Iakob [was] a resourceful human, dwelling in a house.
25:28 And Isaák loved Esau, because his hunting [was] food for him, but Rebekka loved Iakob.
25:29 And Iakob boiled stew. And Esau came from out of the plains, failling.
25:30 And Esau said to Iakob: “Let me taste from this red stew, because I fail.” On account of this his name was called Edom.
25:31 And Iakob said to Esau: “Give to me today your birthrights.”
25:32 And Esau said: “Behold: I am going to come to an end, and what [are] these to me, the birthrights?”
25:33 And Iakob said to him: “You swear by an oath to me today.” And he swore by an oath to him. And Esau gave the birthrights to Iakob.
25:34 And Iakob gave bread to Esau, and stew of lentils. And he ate and drank. And rising up, he set out. And Esau treated the birthrights as worthless.
26:1 And there became a famine upon the land, separate from the former famine, which was in the time of Abraám. And Isaák went to Abimelech, king of the Phylistieim, to Gerara.
26:2 And [the] lord appeared to him, and said: “Go not down into Aigyptos, but dwell in the land whichever I should tell you.
26:3 And sojourn in this land. And I will be with you. And I will bless you, for I will give all this land to you and your seed. And I will establish my oath which I swore to your father Abraám.
26:4 And I will multiply your seed as the stars of the heaven. And I will give [to] your seed all this land. And all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in your seed,
26:5 because your father Abraám obeyed my voice, and guarded my orders, and my commandments, and my ordinances, and my laws.”
26:6 And Isaák dwelt in Gerara.
26:7 And the men of the place asked concerning his wife Rebekka. And he said: “She is my sister”, for he feared to say: ‘She is my wife’, lest at any time the men of the place should kill him on account of Rebekka, for her appearance was beautiful.
26:8 And he became long-lived there. And Abimelech, the king of Gerara, leaned over through the window, [and] saw Isaák playing with his wife Rebekka.
26:9 And Abimelech called Isaák, and said to him: “So is she indeed your wife? Why [is it] that you said: ‘She is my sister’?” And Isaák said to him: “I said [it] for lest at any time I might die on her account.”
26:10 And Abimelech said to him: “Why did you do this to us? [It is a] small [thing] if someone of my kind went to bed with your wife, and you brought upon us [a sin of] ignorance.”
26:11 And Abimelech charged all his people, saying: “Any [one] touching this human and his wife will be liable unto death.”
26:12 And Isaák sowed in that land. And he found in that year barley bearing hundred [-fold]. And [the] lord blessed him.
26:13 And the human was exalted, and was advancing greatly, until of which [time] he became exceedingly great.
26:14 And there became to him cattle of sheep, and cattle of oxen, and many cultivated fields. And the Phylistieim envied him.
26:15 And all the wells which the servants of his father had dug in the time of his father, the Phylistieim obstructed them, and filled them [with] earth.
26:16 And Abimelech said to Isaák: “Go forth away from us, for you became exceedingly mightier than we.”
26:17 And Isaák went forth from there. And he lodged in the ravine of Gerara, and dwelt there.
26:18 And Isaák dug again the wells of water, which the servants of his father Abraám had dug, and the Phylistieim had obstructed after the dying of his father Abraám. And he named them names according to the names which his father named [them].
26:19 And the servants of Isaák dug in the ravine of Gerara, and they found there [a] well [of] living water.
26:20 And the shepherds of Gerara fought with the shepherds of Isaák, asserting the water to be theirs. And they called the name of the well injustice, for they wronged him.
26:21 And departing from there, he dug another well. And they strove also for that. And he named the name of it enmity.
26:22 And he departed from there and dug another well. And they did not strive about that. And he named the name of it expanse, saying: “Because now [the] lord widened us, and caused us to grow us upon the earth.”
26:23 And he went up from there to the well of the oath.
26:24 And [the] lord appeared to him in that night, and said: “I am the Theos of your father Abraám. Do not fear, for I am with you. And I will bless you, and I will multiply your seed through your father Abraám.”
26:25 And he built there an altar, and called upon the name of [the] lord. And he pitched there his tent. And there the servants of Isaák dug a well in the ravine of Gerara.
26:26 And Abimelech went to him from Gerara, and so did his groomsman Ochozath, and Phichol, the commander-in-chief of his army.
26:27 And Isaák said to them: “Why did you come to me, for you detested me, and you sent me away from you?”
26:28 And they said: “Seeing, we have seen that [the] lord was with you. And we said: ‘Let there become an oath between us and between you.’ And we will make a covenant with you:
26:29 You shall not do evil with us, in so far as we did not abhor you, and which manner we treated you well, and sent you out in peace. And now, you are blessed by [the] lord.”
26:30 And he made a banquet for them. And they ate and drank.
26:31 And rising up in the morning, each swore by an oath to his neighbor. And Isaák sent them forth, and they moved away from him with safety.
26:32 And it came to pass in that day, [that] the servants of Isaák coming and reported to him concerning the well which they dug. And they said: “We did not find water.”
26:33 And he called it oath. On account of this he called [the] name [of] that city well of oath, unto today’s day.
26:34 And Esau was forty years [old], and he took [to] wife Ioudith, the daughter of Beoch, the Chettaion, and Basemath, daughter of Elon the Chettaion.
26:35 And they were striving [with] Isaák and Rebekka.
27:1 And it came to pass after the growing old of Isaák, that his eyes were [too] blunted to see. And he called Esau, his elder son, and said to him: “My son.” And he said: “Look: I [am here].”
27:2 And he said: “Look: I have grown old, and know not the day of my finishing.
27:3 Now then, take your [hunting] equipment, both the quiver and the bow, and go forth into the plain, and hunt prey for me.
27:4 And make for me food, as I love [it]. And bring [this] to me, that I may eat, that my soul may bless you, before my dying.”
27:5 And Rebekka heard Isaák speaking to his son Esau. And Esau went into the plain to hunt prey for his father.
27:6 And Rebekka said to her younger son Iakob: “Look: I heard your father speaking to your brother Esau, saying:
27:7 ‘Bring prey to me, and make food for me, that eating, I may bless you before [the] lord before my dying.’
27:8 Now then, my son, hearken to me as I give charge to you:
27:9 And going into the sheep, you take for me from there two kids, tender and good. And I will make them [into] food for your father as he loves [it].
27:10 And you shall carry [them] in [to] your father, and he shall eat, that your father may bless you before his dying.”
27:11 And Iakob said to his mother Rebekka: “My brother is a hairy man, and I a smooth man.
27:12 Lest at any time my father should touch me, and I will be before him as despised, and I shall bring upon myself a curse, and not a blessing.”
27:13 And the mother said to him: “Upon me [will be] your curse, child. Merely hearken to my voice. And in going, bring [them] to me.”
27:14 So going, he took [them] and brought [them] to the mother. And his mother made food as his father loved [it].
27:15 And Rebekka having taken the better [hunting] equipment of her elder son Esau, which was by her in the house, she put it on her younger son Iakob.
27:16 And she put the skins of the kids upon his arms, and upon the naked [parts] of his neck.
27:17 And she gave the foods and the bread loaves which she made into the hands of her son Iakob.
27:18 And he carried [this] in [to] his father, and said: “Father.” And he said: “Look: I [am here]. Who are you, child?”
27:19 And Iakob said [to] his father: “I, Esau, your first-born. I did as you told me. In rising up, [come] take a seat, and eat from my prey, that your soul may bless me.”
27:20 And Isaák said to his son: “What is this which you [so] quickly found, child?” And he said: “[That] which [the] lord, the Theos of you, delivered over before me.”
27:21 And Isaák said to Iakob: “Approach me, and I will touch you, child, [to be sure] if you are my son Esau or not.”
27:22 And Iakob approached to his father Isaák. And he touched him, and said: “The voice [is] truly [the] voice of Iakob, but the hands [are the] hands of Esau.”
27:23 And he did not recognize him, for his hands were as the hands of his brother Esau: hairy. And he blessed him.
27:24 And he said: “Are you my son Esau?” And he said: “I [am].”
27:25 And he said: “Bring to me, and I will eat from your prey, child, that my soul may bless you. And he brought [it] near to him, and he ate. And he brought him wine, and he drank.
27:26 And his father Isaák said to him: “Approach me, and kiss me, child.”
27:27 And approaching, he kissed him. And he smelled the smell of his garments, and blessed him, and said: “Look: [the] smell of my son [is] as [the] smell of a full field, which [the] lord blessed.
27:28 And may the Theos give you from the dew of the heaven, and from the fatness of the earth, and a multitude of grain and wine.
27:29 And let nations serve you. And let rulers do obeisance to you. And you become lord of your brother. And the sons of your father will do obeisance to you. The one cursing you [will be] accursed, and the one blessing you [will be] blessed.”
27:30 And it came to pass after the ceasing of Isaák blessing his son Iakob, that it came to pass when Iakob went forth from [the] face of his father Isaák, that his brother Esau came from the hunt.
27:31 And he also made himself food, and brought [this] near his father. And he said to the father: “Rise up. my father, and eat from the prey of his son, that your soul may bless me.”
27:32 And his father Isaák said to him: “Who are you?” And he said: “I am your first-born son Esau.”
27:33 And Isaák was amazed [with an] exceedingly great bewilderment. And he said: “Who then [is] the [one] hunting prey for me, and carrying [this] in to me? And I ate from all before your coming, and blessed him, and let it be a blessing.”
27:34 And it came to pass when Esau heard the words of his father Isaák, he cried out with a great and exceedingly bitter voice. And he said: “Then bless also me, father!”
27:35 And he said to him: “[In] coming with deceit, your brother took your blessing.”
27:36 And he said: “Justly was his name called Iakob, for he has stomped upon me already this second [time]. Even my birthrights he has taken, and now he took my blessing.” And Esau said [to] his father: “Do you not leave behind blessing to me, father?”
27:37 And answering Isaák said to Esau: “If I have made him your lord, and I made all his brothers his servants, to strengthen him [with] grain and wine, what then may I do to you, child?”
27:38 And Esau said to his father: “Is there not one blessing in you, father? Then bless me also, father.” And Isaák being emotionally pierced through, Esau yelled out a sound aloud, and he wept.
27:39 And answering, his father Isaák said to him: “Look: your dwelling will be away from the fatness of the earth, and away from the dew of the heaven from above.
27:40 And you shall live upon your sword. And you will be a servant of your brother. And there will be [a time] when you should take down and loosen his yoke away from your neck.”
27:41 And Esau was angry [at] Iakob on account of the blessing, [with] which his father blessed him. And Esau said in his mind: “Let approach the days of mourning of my father, that I may kill my brother Iakob.”
27:42 And the words of her elder son Esau were reported to Rebekka. And sending forth, she called her younger son Iakob. And she said to him: “Look: your brother Esau threatens you to kill you.
27:43 Now then, child, hear my voice: And rising up, run away into Mesopotamia, to my brother Laban, into Charran.
27:44 And dwell with him some days,
27:45 until your brother’s anger and rage turn away from you, and he should forget what you have done to him. And sending, I will fetch you from there, lest at any time I should be childless from the two of you in one day.”
27:46 And Rebekka said to Isaák: “I loathe my life, on account of the daughters of the sons of Chet. If Iakob shall take a wife from the daughters of this land, why [is it] for me to live?”
28:1 And Isaák having called Iakob, blessed him, and gave charge to him, saying: “You shall not take a wife of the daughters of the Chananaion.
28:2 Having risen up, you run away into Mesopotamia, into the house of Bathouél, the father of your mother. And take to yourself from there a wife of the daughters of Laban, the brother of your mother.
28:3 And may my Theos bless you, and increase you, and multiply you. And you will be into gatherings of nations.
28:4 And may he give to you the blessing of my father Abraám, to you and to your seed after you, to inherit the land of your sojourning, which the Theos gave to Abraám.”
28:5 And Isaák sent away Iakob. And he went into Mesopotamia towards Laban, the son of Bethouél the Syros, brother of Rebekka, the mother of Iakob and Esau.
28:6 And Esau having seen that Isaák blessed Iakob, and sent [him] away into Mesopotamia of Syria to take to himself a wife from there, in the blessing him, and giving charge to him, saying: ‘You shall not take a wife of the daughters of the Chananaion’,
28:7 [that] Iakob hearkened to his father and his mother, and went into Mesopotamia of Syria.
28:8 Now Esau also seeing that the daughters of Chanaán before his father Isaák are evil,
28:9 that Esau went to Ismaél. And he took Maéleth, daughter of Ismaél, the son of Abraám, [and] sister of Nabeoth, towards his wives [as a] wife.
28:10 And Iakob went forth from the well of the oath, and departed into Charran.
28:11 And he encountered a place and slept there, for Helios went down. And he took from [one] of the stones of the place, and put [it] towards his head, and went to sleep in that place.
28:12 And he dreamed. And behold: [there was] a ladder firmly fixed in the earth, whose top reached into the heaven. And the messengers of the Theos ascended and descended upon it.
28:13 And the lord strengthened upon it. And he said: “I [am] the Theos of Abraám and the Theos of Isaák, your father. Do not fear! The land on which you sleep upon it, I will give it to you and your seed.
28:14 And your seed will be as sand of the earth. And it will be widened upon [the] west, and [the] south, and [the] north, and upon [the] east. And in you all the tribes of the earth will be blessed, and in your seed.
28:15 And behold: I am with you, protecting you in every way of whichever you may go. And I will return you into this land, for no way would I abandon you until my doing all as much as I spoke to you.”
28:16 And Iakob awoke from out of his sleep. And he said: “[The] lord is in this place, but I had not known [it].”
28:17 And he feared, and said: “How fearful [is] this place! This is none other than [the] house of the Theos, and this [is] the gate of heaven.”
28:18 And Iakob rose up in the morning, and took the stone which he placed there towards his head. And he set it up [as] a monument, and poured oil upon the top of it.
28:19 And he called the name of that place: House of Theos. And the name of the city before was Oulamlouz.
28:20 And Iakob vowed a vow, saying: “If the lord Theos should be with me, and should guard me in this journey which I go, and should give to me bread to eat, and a cloak to put on,
28:21 and should return me with safety into the house of my father, then shall [the] lord be to me into Theos.
28:22 And this stone, which I set up [as a] monument, will be to me Theos’ house. And all, whatever you should give to me, I will tithe a tenth of it to you.”
29:1 And Iakob lifting [his] feet went into [the] land of [the] east, towards Laban, the son of Bathouél the Syros, brother of Rebekka, mother of Iakob and Esau.
29:2 And he saw, and behold: [There was a] well in the plain. And there were there three flocks of sheep resting upon it, for from out of that well they watered the flocks. But there was a great stone upon the mouth of the well.
29:3 And there came together all the flocks. And they rolled away the stone from the mouth of the well, and they watered the flocks, and restored the stone upon the mouth of the well into [its] place.
29:4 And Iakob said to them: “Brothers, from what place are you?” And they said: “We are from Charran.”
29:5 And he said to them: “You know Laban, the son of Nachor?” And they said: “We know [him].”
29:6 And he said to them: “Is he well?” And they said: “He is well.” And behold: His daughter Rachel comes with the sheep.
29:7 And Iakob said: “There is still much day, [for] not yet [is the] hour [for] the cattle to be gathered together. Having watered the sheep [and] sending them forth, graze [them].”
29:8 And they said: “We are not be able [to do this] until the gathering together of all the shepherds, and they should roll away the stone from the mouth of the well, and we shall water the sheep.”
29:9 While he [was] speaking to them, and behold: Rachel, the daughter of Laban, came with the sheep of her father, for she grazed the sheep of her father.
29:10 And it came to pass as Iakob saw Rachel, the daughter of Laban, the brother of his mother, and the sheep of Laban, the brother of his mother, that Iakob coming forward rolled away the stone from the mouth of the well. And he watered the sheep of Laban, the brother of his mother.
29:11 And Iakob kissed Rachel. And yelling [with] his voice he wept.
29:12 And he reported to Rachel that he is a brother of her father, and that he is a son of Rebekka. And she ran to report to her father concerning these words.
29:13 And it came to pass as Laban heard the name Iakob, the son of his sister, [that] he ran to meet him. And embracing him, he kissed him, and brought him into his house. And he described [to] Laban all these words.
29:14 And Laban said to him: “From out of my bones and from out of my flesh are you.” And he was with him a full month of days.
29:15 And Laban said to Iakob that: “Because you are my brother, you shall not serve me without payment. You tell to me what your wage is.”
29:16 And [to] Laban there were two daughters: [the] name of the older [being] Leia, and [the] name of the younger [being] Rachel.
29:17 But the eyes of Leia [were] weak. Rachel on the other hand was good [to] the sight, and exceedingly blooming in appearance.
29:18 And Iakob loved Rachel. And he said: “I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.”
29:19 And Laban said to him; “[It is] better for me to give her to you, than for me to give her to another man. You dwell with me.”
29:20 And Iakob served for Rachel seven years, and they were before him as a few days, by his love for her.
29:21 And Iakob said to Laban: “Give to me my wife, for the days are fulfilled, so as to enter to her.”
29:22 And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a wedding.
29:23 And it became evening. And taking his daughter Leia, he brought her to Iakob. And Iakob entered towards her.
29:24 And Laban gave his handmaid Zelpha to his daughter Leia [as] her handmaid.
29:25 And it happened in the morning, and behold: It was Leia! And Iakob said to Laban: “What [is] this that you did to me? [Was it] not on account of Rachel [that] I served for you? And why did you deceive me?”
29:26 And Laban said: “It is not so in our place to give the younger before the elder.
29:27 You complete then these sevenths, and I will give to you also this woman for the work of which you will work for me, yet another seven years.”
29:28 And Iakob did so, and fulfilled these sevenths. And Laban gave to him his daughter Rachel, to him [as] wife.
29:29 And Laban gave the handmaid Balla to his daughter [as] her handmaid.
29:30 And he entered towards Rachel. And he loved Rachel more than Leia. And he served him another seven years.
29:31 And the lord Theos seeing that Leia was hated, he opened her womb. But Rachel was barren.
29:32 And Leia conceived and bore a son to Iakob. And she called his name Rouben, saying: “Because [the] lord saw my humiliation, and he gave me a son. Now then my husband will love me.”
29:33 And she conceived again, and bore a second son to Iakob. And she said: “Because [the] lord heard that I am hated, he gave in addition to me also this one.” And she called his name Symeon.
29:34 And she conceived again, and bore a son, and said: “In the present time, my husband will be with me, for I bore to him three sons.” On account of this she called his name Levi.
29:35 And conceiving again, she bore a son, and said: “Now again. This [time] I will give thanks to [the] lord.” On account of this she called his name Iouda. And she ceased bearing.
30:1 And Rachel saw that she has not borne to Iakob. And Rachel envied her sister. And she said to Iakob: “Give me children. And if not, I will come to an end.”
30:2 And Iakob, being enraged with Rachel, said to her: “Am I in the place of Theos, who deprived you [of the] fruit of [the] belly?”
30:3 And Rachel said to Iakob: “Behold: my maidservant Balla. Enter towards her, and she will bear upon my knees, and also I will produce children from out of her.”
30:4 And she gave Balla to him: her maidservant to him [as] wife. And Iakob entered towards her.
30:5 And Balla, the maidservant of Rachel, conceived, and bore to Iakob a son.
30:6 And Rachel said: “The Theos judged me, and listened to my voice, and has gave me a son through this [one]. On account of this she called his name Dan.”
30:7 And Balla, the maidservant of Rachel, conceived again, and bore a second son to Iakob.
30:8 And Rachel said: “The Theos has aided me, and I was twisted [by] my sister, and I was able.” And she called his name Nephthaleím.
30:9 And Leia saw that she ceased [from] bearing. And she took her maidservant Zelpha, and gave her to Iakob [as] wife. And he entered towards her.
30:10 And Zelpha, the maidservant of Leia, conceived, and bore Iakob a son.
30:11 And Leia said: “[I am] in good luck.” And she named his name Gad.
30:12 And Zelpha, the maidservant of Leia, conceived again, and bore to Iakob a second son.
30:13 And Leia said: “I [am] blessed, for the women pronounce me blessed.” And she called his name Aser.
30:14 And Rouben proceeded in [the] day [of the] wheat harvest, and he found apples of mandrakes in the field. And he brought them to his mother Leia. And Rachel said to her sister Leia: “Give of me of the mandrakes of your son!”
30:15 And Leia said: “[Is it] not sufficient to you that you took my husband? Shall you also take of the mandrakes of my son?” And Rachel said: “Not so. Let him go to bed with you this night in return for the mandrakes of your son.”
30:16 And Iakob entered from out of [the] field [at] evening. And Leia came forth to meet him, and said: “You shall enter towards me today, for I have hired you in return for the mandrakes of my son.” And he went to bed with her that night.
30:17 And the Theos listened to Leia. And conceiving, she bore a fifth son [to] Iakob.
30:18 And Leia said: “The Theos gave to me my wage, because I gave my maidservant to my husband.” And she called his name Issachar, which is wage.
30:19 And Leia conceived again, and bore a sixth son [to] Iakob.
30:20 And Leia said: “The Theos has given me a good gift in the present time. My man will select me, for having born to him six sons.” And she called his name Zaboulon.
30:21 And after this she bore a daughter, and she called her name Deina.
30:22 And the Theos remembered Rachel. And the Theos listened to her, and he opened her womb.
30:23 And conceiving, she bore to Iakob a son. And Rachel said: “The Theos removed [from] me the scorn.”
30:24 And she called his name Ioseph, saying: “Let the Theos add to me another son.”
30:25 And it came to pass when Rachel bore Ioseph, [that] Iakob said to Laban: “Send me away, that I may go forth into my place and into my land.
30:26 Restore to me my wives and my children, for whom I have served to you, that I might go forth, for you know the service wherewith I have served you.”
30:27 And Laban said to him: “Could I even foretell if I found grace before you? For the Theos blessed me [in] your entrance.
30:28 Order your wage towards me, and I will give [it].”
30:29 And Iakob said: “You know in what I served you, and how much of your cattle was with me.
30:30 For it was little as much as was to you before me, and it was grown into a multitude. And the lord Theos blessed upon my foot. Now then, when shall I also make for myself a house?”
30:31 And Laban said to him: “What shall I give you?” And Iakob said to him: “You shall not give to me anything. If you should do for me this word, I will again tend your flocks and guard [them].
30:32 Let all your sheep pass by today, and set apart from there every grey sheep among the rams, and all white-mixed and speckled among the goats. It will be to me [the] wage.
30:33 And my righteousness will listen to me in the next day, for my wage [is] before you. All which might not be speckled and white-mixed among the goats, and grey among the rams, will be [as] stolen beside me.”
30:34 And Laban said to him: “Let it be according to your word.”
30:35 And he set apart in that day the speckled and the white-mixed male goats, and all the speckled and the white-mixed female goats, and all grey, the one which was among the rams, and every one that was white among them. And he gave [them] in [the] hand of his sons.
30:36 And he put a distance of three days’ journey between them and between Iakob. Now Iakob was shepherding Laban’s remaining sheep.
30:37 And Iakob took to himself a rod of green poplar, and of walnut, and of [the] plane-tree. And Iakob peeled them [into] white peels, tearing away the green. And there appeared upon the rods the white stripe which he peeled [into] many colored.
30:38 And he placed the rods which he peeled in the channels of the watering troughs of the water, that whenever the sheep came to drink before the rods, those having come to drink should become stimulated into the rods,
30:39 and the sheep should produce white-mixed, and colored, and ashen-speckled [young].
30:40 And Iakob set apart the lambs. And he set a white-mixed ram before the sheep, and every colored [one] among the lambs. And he parted to himself flocks for himself, and did not mingle them into the sheep of Laban.
30:41 And it came to pass in the time wherein the sheep became stimulated in [the] womb, [that] Iakob taking [them] put the rods before the sheep in the watering troughs [for] the [purpose of] stimulating them by the rods.
30:42 But whenever the sheep bore, he did not place [them]. And the unmarked ones became Laban’s, and the marked Iakob’s.
31:1 And Iakob heard the words of the sons of Laban, saying: “Iakob has taken it all of our father. And in the [things] of our father he has made all this glory.”
31:2 And Iakob saw the face of Laban. And behold: he was not towards him as yesterday and [the] third day [before].
31:3 And [the] lord said to Iakob: “Return to the land of your father, and to your family, and I will be with you.”
31:4 And sending, Iakob called Leia and Rachel to the plain where the flocks were.
31:5 And he said to them: “I see the face of your father, that it not towards me as yesterday and [the] third day [before]. But the Theos of my father was with me.
31:6 But also you yourselves know that with all my strength I have served your father.
31:7 But your father cheated me, and changed my wages with the ten lambs. And the Theos gave him not [the power] to do evil [against] me.
31:8 If he should have said thus: ‘The many-colored will be your wage, then all the sheep would bear many colors.’ And if he should have said: ‘The white will be your wage, then all the sheep would bear white.’
31:9 So then the Theos removed all the cattle of your father, and he gave them to me.
31:10 And it came to pass when the sheep were stimulated in [the] womb conceiving, that I saw them with my eyes in sleep. And behold: the male goats and the rams mounted upon the sheep and the female goats: white-mixed and many-colored and ashen speckled.
31:11 And the messenger of the Theos said to me during sleep: ‘Iakob!’ And I said: ‘What is it?’
31:12 And he said: ‘Look up [with] your eyes, and see the male goats and the rams mounting upon the sheep and the female goats: white-mixed and many-colored and ashen speckled, for I have seen as much as Laban does to you.
31:13 I am the Theos, the one appearing to you in [the] place of Theos, where you anointed a monument to me, and vowed to me there a vow. Now then, rise up and go forth from out of this land. And go forth into the land of your birth. And I will be with you.’ ”
31:14 And answering, Rachel and Leia said to him: “Is there not to us still a portion or inheritance in the house of our father?
31:15 [Are we] not considered as the strangers to him, for he has sold us? And by eating up, he devoured our silvery.
31:16 All the riches and the glory which the Theos removed of our father will be ours and our children’s. Now then, as much as the Theos has said to you, you do!”
31:17 And Iakob rising up, took his wives and his children up on the camels.
31:18 And he took away all his goods, and all his belongings which he purchased in Mesopotamia, and all his [things], to go forth towards his father Isaák in [the] land of Chanaán.
31:19 And Laban went to shear his sheep. And Rachel stole idols of her father.
31:20 And Iakob hid [their departure from] Laban the Syros, [so as] not to announce to him that he [is] running away.
31:21 And he ran away, himself and all of his. And he passed over the river, and went into the mountain of Galaád.
31:22 But it was announced to Laban the Syros on the third day, that Iakob ran away.
31:23 And taking all the ones of his brothers with himself, he pursued after him seven days’ journey. And he overtook him in the mountain of Galaád.
31:24 And the Theos came to Laban the Syros during sleep in the night, and said to him: “Guard, lest at any time you should speak evil against Iakob.”
31:25 And Laban overtook Iakob. And Iakob pitched his tent in the mountain. And Laban stationed his brothers in the mountain of Galaád.
31:26 And Laban said to Iakob: “What did you do? Why did you secretly run away, and ransacked me, and took away my daughters as captives [taken by] sword?
31:27 For if you had told me, I would have even sent you out with gladness, and with music, and tambourines, and harps.
31:28 And I [was] not [counted] worthy to kiss my children and my daughters fervently. Now then, you acted unwisely.
31:29 And now my hand has power to do evil [against] you. But the Theos of your father said to me yesterday, saying: ‘Guard yourself, lest at any time you should speak evil against Iakob.’
31:30 Now then, you go, for with desire you desired to go forth into the house of your father. [But] why did you steal my gods?”
31:31 And answering Iakob said to Laban: “Because I was afraid, for I said: ‘Lest at any time you should take away your daughters from me, and all my [possessions].’ ”
31:32 And Iakob said: “With whomsoever you shall find your gods, he shall not live before our brothers. Recognize what is from me of the [things] of yours, and take [this].” And he did not recognize among [what was] his: not one [thing]. But Iakob did not know that his wife Rachel stole them.
31:33 And entering, Laban searched into the house of Leia, and he found not. And he came forth from out of the house of Leia, and searched in the house of Iakob, and in the house of the two maidservants, and found not. And he entered also into the house of Rachel.
31:34 And Rachel took the idols, and put them into the packsaddles of the camel, and sat on them.
31:35 And she said to her father: “Be not bear heavily, lord. I shall not be able to rise up before you, for the custom of women is to me.” Laban searched in the [entire] house, and found not the idols.
31:36 And Iakob was angry, and quarreled [with] Laban. And responding, Iakob said to Laban: “What is my misdeed, and what my sin, that you pursued after me,
31:37 and that you searched all the goods of my house? What did you find from all the goods of your house? Put [this] here between your brothers and my brothers, and let them reprove between us two!
31:38 These twenty years have I been with you. Your sheep and your female goats were not barren. I did not eat rams of your sheep.
31:39 That taken by wild beasts, I brought not to you. I paid for [this] by myself, [the] thefts by day, and [the] thefts by night.
31:40 I was burning with sweltering heat by day, and with the icy coldness of the night. And my sleep departed from my eyes.
31:41 These twenty years have I been in your house. I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years among your sheep. And you cheated my wage [by] ten ewe-lambs.
31:42 Unless the Theos of Abraám, and the fear of my father Isaák was with me, now then you would have sent me away empty. The Theos saw my humiliation and the laborious toil of my hands, and he reproved you yesterday.”
31:43 And responding Laban said to Iakob: “The daughters [are] my daughters, and [the] sons my sons, and the cattle my cattle. And all as much as you see is mine, and the [property] of my daughters. What shall I do to them today, or the children of them whom they bore?
31:44 Now then, come, let us make a covenant, both I and you. And it will be into [a] testimony between me and you.” And he said to him: “Behold: there is no one with us. Behold: the Theos is witness between me and you.”
31:45 And Iakob taking a stone, set it [as a] monument.
31:46 And Iakob said to his brothers: “Gather stones!” And they gathered stones and made a hill. And they ate there upon the hill. And Laban said to him: “This hill witnesses between me and you today.”
31:47 And Laban called it: the hill of testimony. And Iakob called it: [the] hill [is] witness.
31:48 And Laban said to Iakob: “Behold: this hill, and the monument, which I have set between me and you: this hill witnesses, and this monument witnesses.” Therefore, its name was called: the hill witnesses.
31:49 And the vision [of] which he said: “Let the Theos look between me and you”, [is] that we will leave [the] other from [the] other.
31:50 If you shall humiliate my daughters, if you should take wives in addition to my daughters, beware no one is with us seeing [but] the Theos [is] witness between me and between you.”
31:51 And Laban said to Iakob: “Behold: this hill is a witness, and this monument.
31:52 For if I should not cross over unto you, neither should you cross over to me, for mischief [lies] beyond this hill and this monument.
31:53 The Theos of Abraám and the Theos of Nachor judges between us.”
31:54 And Iakob swore by an oath according to the fear of his father Isaák. And he offered a sacrifice in the mountain, and called his brothers. And they ate and drank, and went to sleep in the mountain.
31:55 And Laban rising up in the morning, kissed his sons and daughters, and blessed them. And Laban turned [and] went forth to his place.
32:1 And Iakob went forth into his own way. And having looked up, he saw [the] encamped camp of Theos. And the messengers of the Theos met with him.
32:2 And Iakob said, when he saw them: “This is [the] camp of Theos.” And he called the name of that place: Camps.
32:3 And Iakob sent messengers before him towards his brother Esau, into the land of Seéir, into the region of Edom.
32:4 And he gave charge to them, saying: “Thus shall you say [to] my lord Esau: ‘Thus says your servant Iakob: I sojourned with Laban and passed time until the present.
32:5 And oxen came to me, and donkeys, and sheep, and manservants, and maidservants. And I sent to announce to my lord Esau, that your servant might find grace before you.’ ”
32:6 And the messengers returned to Iakob, saying: “We came to your brother Esau. And behold: he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men with him.”
32:7 And Iakob was feared exceedingly, and was perplexed. And he divided the people that were with him, and the cows, and the camels, and the sheep, into two camps.
32:8 And Iakob said: “If Esau should come into one camp, and should smite it, the second camp will be into being saved.”
32:9 And Iakob said: “The Theos of my father Abraám, and the Theos of my father Isaák, lord, the one saying to me: ‘Run into the land of your birth, and I will do good to you.’
32:10 It made me sufficient, away from all righteousness and away from all the truth, of which you did to your servant. For with this staff of mine I passed over this Iordanes, and now I have become into two camps.
32:11 Deliver me from [the] hand of my brother, from [the] hand of Esau, for I fear him, lest coming he should smite me, and [the] mother upon children.
32:12 But you said: ‘I will do you good, and will make your seed as the sand of the sea, which shall not be counted from under the multitude.’ ”
32:13 And he went to slept there that night. And he took gifts of which he brought, and sent to his brother Esau:
32:14 two hundred female goats, twenty male goats, two hundred sheep, twenty rams,
32:15 thirty suck-giving camels and their children, forty cows, ten bulls, twenty donkeys, and ten foals.
32:16 And he gave them [to] his servants: a flock alone. And he said [to] his servants: “You go forth in front of me, and make space between flock and flock.”
32:17 And he gave charge to the first, saying: “If my brother Esau should meet you, and he should ask you, saying: ‘Who are you, and where might you go, and who [are] these going before you?’,
32:18 you shall say: ‘Your servant Iakob has sent gifts to my lord Esau. And behold: he [is] behind us.’ ”
32:19 And he gave charged to the first, and to the second, and to the third, and to all the [ones] going before after these flocks, saying: “According to this saying you speak [to] Esau when you find him.
32:20 And you shall say: ‘Behold: your servant Iakob comes after us. For he said: I will appease his face in the gifts going before him, and after this I will see his face, for perhaps he will favorably receive my face.’ ”
32:21 And the gifts went before his face. And he went to sleep that night in the camp.
32:22 And rising that night, he took the two wives and the two maidservants, and the eleven children, and crossed over the ford of Iabok.
32:23 And he took them, and passed over the torrent, and caused to pass over all that of his.
32:24 And Iakob was left behind alone. And a human wrestled with him till [the] morning.
32:25 And he saw that he was not able to [prevail against] him. And he touched the breadth of his thigh. And he paralyzed the breadth of the thigh of Iakob in his wrestling with him.
32:26 And he said to him: “You send me [away]”, for the dawn ascended. But he said: “No way will I send you away if you should not bless me.”
32:27 And he said to him: “What is your name?” And he said: “Iakob”.
32:28 And he said to him: “Your name shall not any longer be called Iakob, but Israél will be your name, for you grew in strength with the Theos, and you will be with mighty humans.”
32:29 And Iakob asked and said: “Announce to me your name.” And he said: “Why [is] this [that] you ask my name?” And he blessed him there.
32:30 And Iakob called the name of that place: Appearance of Theos, for [he said:] “I saw the Theos face to face, and my soul was preserved.”
32:31 And the Helios arose to him, when he went by the appearance of the Theos, but he was limping in his thigh.
32:32 Because of this, no way [do] the sons of Israél eat the nerve [by] which he was paralyzed, which is upon the breadth of the thigh, until this day, for he touched the breadth of the thigh of Iakob, of the nerve in which he was paralyzed.
33:1 And Iakob looking up, saw. And behold: his brother Esau [was] coming, and four hundred men with him. And Iakob divided the children upon Leia and upon Rachel, and the two maidservants.
33:2 And he made the two maidservants and their sons [go] in first, and Leia and her children after, and Rachel and Ioseph last.
33:3 But he went forth in front of them, and did obeisance on to the ground seven times, until approaching [to] his brother.
33:4 And Esau ran up to meet him. And taking hold of him, he kissed [him]. And he fell upon his neck, and he kissed him. And they both wept.
33:5 And Esau looking up, saw the women and the children, and said: “What are these to you?” And he said: “The children with which the Theos showed mercy on your servant.”
33:6 And the maidservants and their children drew near, and did obeisance.
33:7 And Leia and her children drew near, and did obeisance. And after this Rachel and Joseph drew near, and did obeisance.
33:8 And he said: “What are these to you, all these camps which I have met?” And he said: “That your servant might find favor before you, lord.”
33:9 And Esau said: “There is much to me, brother. Let yours be of you.”
33:10 And Iakob said: “If I found favor before you, take the gifts through my hands. Because of this I saw your face, as if one may have seen [the] face of Theos, and you should think well of me.
33:11 Take the [gifts] of my blessings, which I brought to you, because the Theos showed mercy on me, and there is to me all [I need].” And he forced him, and he took [this].
33:12 And he said: “Departing we will go straight.”
33:13 And he said to him: “My lord knows that the children are tender, and the sheep and the oxen upon me are giving birth. If then I should drive them one [more] day, all the cattle will die.
33:14 Let my lord go forth in front of his servant. And I shall gain strength in the way according to [the] ease of the trek before me, and according to [the] foot of the lads, until my coming to my lord into Seéir.”
33:15 And Esau said: “I will leave behind with you from the people of the [ones] with me.” And he said: “Why this? [It is] enough that I have found favor before you, lord.”
33:16 And Esau returned in that day into his way into Seéir.
33:17 And Iakob departed into [his] tents. And he made himself there a dwelling. And for his cattle he made [also] tents. On account of this they call the name of that place: Tents.
33:18 And Iakob came to Salem, a city of Sikima, which is in [the] land of Chanaán, when he returned back out from Mesopotamia of Syria. And he camped beside [the] face of the city.
33:19 And he acquired the portion of the field, where he set his tent, from Emmor, [the] father of Sychem, [for] hundred lambs.
33:20 And he set up there an altar, and called upon the Theos of Israél.
34:1 And Deina, the daughter whom Leia bore to Iakob, went forth to observe the daughters of the native inhabitants.
34:2 And Sychem, the son of Emmor the Evaios, the ruler of the land, saw her. And taking her, he slept with her, and humbled her.
34:3 And he devoted himself to the soul of Deina, the daughter of Iakob. And he loved the virgin. And he spoke concerning the thought of her virgin [-ity].
34:4 Sychem spoke to his father Emmor, saying: “Take for me this maidservant into a wife.”
34:5 And Iakob heard that the son of Emmor had defiled his daughter Deina, [while] his sons were with his cattle in the plain. And Iakob remained silent until they came.

34:8 And Emmor spoke to them, saying: “My son Sychem prefers in his soul your daughter. Give her therefore to him [as] wife,

34:13 And the sons of Iakob responded to Sychem and his father Emmor with deceit, and they spoke to them, for they defiled their sister Deina.
34:14 And Symeon and Levi, the brothers of Deina, said to them: “We shall not be able to do this matter, to give our sister to a human who has a foreskin, for it is a reproach to us.
34:15 Only in this will we be like you, and dwell among you, if you should become as we are, in that every male of yours be circumcised.
34:16 And we will give our daughters to you, and we will take of your daughters for wives to ourselves. And we will dwell with you, and we will be one race.
34:17 But if you should not listen to us, of the being circumcised, [then] taking our daughter we shall go forth.”
34:18 And the words were pleasing before Emmor and before Sychem, the son of Emmor.
34:19 And the young [man] did not pass time to do this word, for he clung to the daughter of Iakob. And he was the most honorable of all of the [ones] in the house of his father.
34:20 And Emmor and his son Sychem came to the gate of their city, and spoke to the men of their city, saying:
34:21 “These humans are peaceable. Let them dwell with us upon the land, and let them trade in it. And behold: the land is spacious before them. We will take to ourselves wives of their daughters, and we shall give our daughters to them.
34:22 In this only will the humans be like us, to dwell with us, so as to be one people, in every male of us being circumcised, as also they have been circumcised.
34:23 And will not their cattle be ours, and their four-footed [animals], and their possessions? Only in this let us be like them, and they will dwell with us.”
34:24 And they listened to Emmor and his son Sychem, all the [ones] going forth at the gate of their city. And they were circumcised in the flesh of their foreskin, every male.
34:25 And it came to pass in the third day, when they were in anguish, [that] the two sons of Iakob, Symeon and Levi, brothers of Deina, taking each man his sword, entered into the city safely, and killed every male.
34:26 And they killed also Emmor and his son Sychem by [the] mouth of [the] sword. And they took Deina from the house of Sychem, and went forth.
34:27 But the sons of Iakob came upon the wounded, and plundered the city in which their sister Deina had been defiled.
34:28 And they took their sheep, and their oxen, and their donkeys, and as much as was in the city, and as much as was in the plain.
34:29 And they captured all the bodies, and all their belongings, and their wives. And they plundered as much as was in the city, and as much as was in the houses.
34:30 And Iakob said to Symeon and Levi: “You have made me detested, so as for me to be evil to all the [ones] dwelling the land, among both the Chananaion and among the Phereziaion. And I am very few in number. And gathering against me, they shall cut me down, and I shall be obliterated, I and my house.”
34:31 And they said: “But they treated our sister as a harlot!”
35:1 And the Theos said to Iakob: “Rising up, ascend into the place Baithel, and dwell there. And make there an altar to the god that appeared to you in the running away from [the] face of your brother Esau.”
35:2 And Iakob said to his house, and to all the [ones] with him: “Remove the strange gods from your midst, and cleanse and change your clothes.
35:3 And rising up, let us ascend into Baithel. And let us there make an altar to the god who listened to me in [the] day of tribulation, who was with me, and preserved me in the way which I went.”

35:5 And Israél lifted up from Sikima. And there was a fear of Theos upon the cities round about them. And they did not pursue after the sons of Israél.

35:18 And it came to pass in her letting go the soul, for she was dying, [that] she called his name: Son of my pain. But [the] father called his name: Beniamin.
35:19 And Rachel died, and was buried in the way of the course of Ephratha; this is Bethleém.

37:8 And his brothers said to him: “Do you mean in reigning you will reign over us, or in dominating you will dominate us?” And they hated him still more, because of his dreams and because of his words.
37:9 And he saw another dream. And described it [to] his father, and [to] his brothers. And he said: “Behold: I dreamed another dream: as if the sun, and the moon, and eleven stars did obeisance to me.”
37:10 And his father reproached him, and said to him: “What [is] this dream which you dreamed? Is it indeed so [that] in having come, I will come also, and your mother, and your brothers, to do obeisance before to you upon the ground?”
37:11 And his brothers envied him, but his father carefully kept the saying.
37:12 And his brothers went to graze the sheep of their father into Sychem.

37:19 And each said to his brother: “Behold: that dreamer comes.
37:20 Now then, come, let us kill him, and cast him into one of the pits. And we shall say: ‘An evil wild beast devoured him.’ And we shall see what his dreams will be.”
37:21 And Rouben hearing [this], rescued him from out of their hands, and said: “Do not strike him into [the] soul.”
37:22 And Rouben said to them: “Shed not blood. Cast him into one of these pits of the ones in the desolate, but bear not a hand against him”, that he might rescue him from out of their hands, and that he might return him [to] his father.
37:23 And it came to pass, when Ioseph came to his brothers, [that] they took the many-colored tunic off Ioseph, the one around him.
37:24 And taking him, they cast him into the pit. But the pit was empty: it did not have water.
37:25 And they sat down to eat bread. And looking up with the eyes they saw. And behold: journeying Ismaélites having come from Galaád, and their camels full of incenses, and balm, and balsam. And they were going, leading down into Aigyptos.
37:26 And Iouda said to his brothers: “What profit if we kill our brother, and hide his blood?
37:27 Come, let us turn him over to these Ismaélites, and the hands of ours, let them not be upon him, for [he is] our brother, and he is our flesh.” And his brothers hearkened.

37:33 And he recognized it, and said: “[The] tunic is of my son. An evil wild beast has devoured him. A wild beast seized Ioseph.”
37:34 And Iakob tore asunder his clothes, and placed sackcloth upon his loin, and mourned [for] his son many days.
37:35 And all his sons and his daughters came together, and came to comfort him. But he did not want to be comforted, saying that “I will go down towards my son in mourning into Hades.” And his father wept for him.
37:36 And the Madienaites sold Ioseph into Aigyptos to Petephres, the eunuch of Pharao, [the] chief guard.
38:1 And it came to pass in that time that Ioudas went down from his brothers, and arrived unto before a certain human of [the] Odollamites, whose name [was] Eiras.
38:2 And Ioudas saw there [the] daughter of [this] human of [the] Chananaion, whose name [was] Sava. And he took her, and entered towards her.
38:3 And she conceived [and] bore a son. And she called his name: Er.
38:4 And she conceived [and] bore a son more. And she called his name: Aunan.
38:5 And adding she bore a son. And she called his name: Selom. And she was in Chasbi when she bore them.
38:6 And Ioudas took a wife [for] Er, his first-born, whose name [was] Thamar.
38:7 And it came to pass [that] Er, [the] first-born of Ioudas, [was] wicked before [the] lord. And the Theos killed him.
38:8 And Ioudas said to Aunan: “Enter towards the wife of your brother, and marry her as the next of kin, and raise up seed to your brother.”
38:9 And Aunan, knowing that the seed will not be his, [that] it came to pass whenever he entered towards his brother’s wife, that he poured upon the ground, to not give seed to his brother.
38:10 And it appeared wicked before the Theos, that he did this, and he put to death also this one.
38:11 And Ioudas said to his daughter-in-law Thamar: “You sit as a widow in the house of your father, until my son Selom becomes big.” For he said: “Lest at any time also this [one] should also die as his brothers.” And Thamar going forth, sat in the house of her father.

38:13 And it was reported to his daughter-in-law Thamar, saying: “Behold: your father-in-law ascends to Thamna, to shear his sheep.”
38:14 And removing the garments of the widowhood from herself, she put around a lightweight covering, and bedecked [herself], and sat by the gates of Ainan, which is in [the] passage to Thamna, for she saw that Selom was big, but he did not give her to him as wife.
38:15 And Ioudas seeing her, assumed her to be a harlot, for she covered her face. And he recognized her not.
38:16 And he turned aside towards her [beside] the way. And he said to her: “Allow me to enter towards you”, for did he did not know that she is his daughter-in-law. And she said: “What will you give to me if you should enter towards me?”
38:17 And he said: “I will send to you a kid of goats from out of my flock.” And she said: “You should give an earnest, until you send [it].”
38:18 And he said: “What earnest shall I give to you?” And she said: “Your ring, and your pendant, and the rod in your hand.” And he gave [this] to her, and entered towards her. And in [the] belly, she conceived from him.
38:19 And rising up, she went forth. And she removed her lightweight covering from herself, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
38:20 And Ioudas sent the kid of goats in [the] hand of his shepherd, the Odollamite, to recover the earnest from the woman. And he did not find her.
38:21 And he asked the men of the place: “Where is the harlot, the [one] being in Ainan upon the way?” And they said: “There was no harlot here.”
38:22 And he returned to Ioudas, and said: “I did not find her. And the men, the ones from the place, say: ‘There was no harlot here.’ ”
38:23 And Ioudas said: “Let her have them. But lest at any time we should be ridiculed: I indeed sent this kid, but you have not found her.”
38:24 And it came to pass after three months, [that] it was announced to Ioudas, saying: “Your daughter-in-law Thamar fornicated. And behold: she has in [the] belly from out of fornication.” And Ioudas said: “Lead her out, and let her be incinerated.”
38:25 And [while] leading her, she sent to her father-in-law, saying: “From the human whom these [items] are I have in [the] belly.” And she said: “Recognize whose ring and pendant and rod these [are].”
38:26 And Ioudas knew [this], and said: “Thamar has done justice rather than I, because I did not give my son Selom. And he did not add to know her more.”
38:27 And it came to pass when she was bringing forth, that these were twins in her belly.
38:28 And it came to pass in her bringing forth, [that] one put forth the hand. And taking [it], the midwife tied upon his hand a scarlet, saying: “This [one] will come out first.”
38:29 And as he retracted the hand, straightway came forth his brother. And she said: “Why was the fence cut because of you?” And she called his name: Phares.
38:30 And after this came forth his brother, with whom was upon his hand the scarlet [thread]. And she called his name: Zara.
39:1 And Ioseph was carried down into Aigyptos. And Petephres, the eunuch of [the] Pharao, the chief guard, an Aigyptios, acquired him from out of [the] hands of the Ismaélites, the ones that led him there.
39:2 And [the] lord was with Ioseph. And he was an obtaining man. And he was in the house beside his lord, the Aigyptios.
39:3 And his lord saw that the lord was with him. And whatever as much as he should do, [the] lord prospered the way in his hands.
39:4 And Ioseph found favor before his lord. And he was well-pleasing to him. And he placed him over his house. And all as much as was his, he gave through [the] hand of Ioseph.
39:5 And it came to pass after placing him over his house, and over all as much as was his, that [the] lord blessed the house of the Aigyptios through Ioseph. And he became a blessing for [his] lord in all his possessions in the house, and in his field.
39:6 And he entrusted all as much as was his into [the] hand of Ioseph. And he did not know about his own [things], not one [thing], except the bread which he ate. And Ioseph was good to the sight, and exceedingly beautiful in countenance.
39:7 And it came to pass after these words that the wife of his lord placed her eyes upon Ioseph, and said: “Sleep with me”.
39:8 But he [was] not willing. And he said to the wife of his lord: “If my lord [does] not know because of me one thing in his house, and he gave into my hands all as much as is his,
39:9 and not one [thing] in this house exists outside of me, nor [is] one [thing ] secretly removed from me, except you, through you being his wife, then how should I do this wicked thing, and sin before the Theos?”
39:10 And when she spoke [to] Ioseph day by day, he hearkened not to her to sleep with her, to be intimate with her.
39:11 But it came to pass on a certain day, [that] Ioseph entered into the house to do his works, and no one in the house [-hold] was inside.
39:12 And she drew him by [his] clothes, saying: “Sleep with me.” And leaving behind his clothes in her hands, he fled, and went forth outside.
39:13 And it came to pass as she saw that [him] leaving behind his clothes in her hands, and he fled, and went forth outside,
39:14 that she called the [ones] being in the house [-hold], and said to them, saying: “See: he brought in to us servant of [the] Ebraion to mock us. He entered towards me, saying: ‘Sleep with me.’ And I cried out with a great voice.
39:15 And in his hearing that my voice was raised and I cried out, leaving behind his clothes with me, he fled, and went forth outside.”
39:16 And she left the clothes by her, until the lord came into his house.
39:17 And she spoke to him according to these words, saying: “The servant of [the] Ebraion, whom you brought in towards us, entered towards me to mock me. And he said to me: ‘I will sleep with you.’
39:18 But as he heard that I raised my voice and cried out, leaving behind his clothes with me, he fled and went forth outside.”
39:19 And it came to pass as his lord heard the words of his wife, as much as she spoke to him, saying [that] thus did your servant to me, that he was enraged [with] anger.
39:20 And the lord taking Ioseph, and put him into the dungeon, into the place in which the prisoners of the king were held, there in the dungeon.
39:21 And [the] lord was with Ioseph, and poured down mercy upon him. And he gave to him favor before the chief jailer.
39:22 And the chief jailer gave the jail through [the] hand of Ioseph, and all [ones] being taken away, as many as [were] in the jail. And all as much as they do there, he was doing [this].
39:23 Through him, the chief jailer was not knowing [anything], not one [thing], for all was through [the] hand of Ioseph, through the lord being with him. And as much as he did, [the] lord prospered the way in his hands.
40:1 And it came to pass after these things, [that] the chief wine taster of the king of Aigyptos and the chief baker sinned [against] their lord, [the] king of Aigyptos.
40:2 And Pharao was provoked to anger over his two eunuchs: over the chief wine taster and over the chief baker.
40:3 And he put them in guard into the jail, into the place there where Ioseph had been taken away there.
40:4 And the chief jailer placed them together [with] Ioseph, and he stood beside them. And they were [some] days in guard.
40:5 And both saw a dream in a single night. And the vision of the dream of the chief wine taster and [the] chief baker, the ones who were to the king of Aigyptos, the ones being in the jail, was this.
40:6 And Ioseph entered towards them in the morning, and saw them: And they were disturbed.
40:7 And he asked the eunuchs of Pharao, who were with him in guard by his lord, saying: “Why [is it] that your faces [are] gloomy today?”
40:8 And they said to him: “We saw a dream, and the interpreting [of] it is not.” And Ioseph said to them: “Is not the explanation of them through the Theos? Describe [them] then to me.”
40:9 And the chief wine taster described his dream [to] Ioseph, and said: “In my sleep there was a grapevine before me.
40:10 And in the grapevine [were] three lower branches. And it flourished offering mature buds, the clusters of [the] grape.
40:11 And the cup of Pharao [was] in my hand. And I took the grape cluster, and squeezed it into the cup, and gave the cup into the hand of Pharao.”
40:12 And Ioseph said to him: “This [is] the interpretation of it: The three lower branches are three days.
40:13 In yet three days and Pharao will remember your chief [position], and he shall restore you to your position of chief wine taster. And you shall give the cup of Pharao into his hand, according to your former position, as you were of [the] wine servers.
40:14 But remember me of yourself, whenever good happens to you, and you shall perform mercifully with me. And you shall remind towards Pharao concerning me, and lead me from out of this dungeon.
40:15 For [by] theft I was stolen from out of [the] land of [the] Ebraion, and here I did not do anything, but they put me into this pit.”
40:16 And the chief baker saw that he interpreted rightly, and he said to Ioseph: “I also saw a dream: and I imagined three baskets of coarse meal loaves.
40:17 And in the upper basket [was the] work of a baker of all kinds of which Pharao eats. And the birds of the heaven ate them from out of the [upper] basket on the top of my head.”
40:18 And answering Ioseph said to him: “This [is] the interpretation of it: The three baskets are three days.
40:19 In yet three days and Pharao will remove your head away from you, and hang you upon a tree. And the birds of the heaven will eat the flesh away from you.”
40:20 And it came to pass in the third day [that] it was the day of birth of Pharao. And he made a banquet for all his servants. And he remembered the chief wine taster and the chief [position] of the chief baker in [the] midst of his servants.
40:21 And he restored the chief wine taster to his chief [position]. And he gave the cup into the hand of Pharao.
40:22 And he hung the chief baker, as Ioseph interpreted to them.
40:23 And the chief wine taster did not remember Ioseph, but forgot him.
41:1 And it came to pass after two years of days, [that] Pharao saw a dream. He imagined standing upon [the bank of] the river.
41:2 And behold: As if from out of the river seven cows ascended, good to the sight, and choice in the flesh. And they were grazing in the reed-grass.
41:3 And another seven cows ascended after these from out of the river, shameful to the sight and thin in the flesh. And [the] feeding by the cows [was] by the lip of the river.
41:4 And the seven shameful and thin in the flesh cows ate up the seven good to the sight and choice [-fleshed] cows. And Pharao awoke.
41:5 And he dreamed the second [dream]. And, behold: Seven ears of corn ascended in the lower branch, [which] are in choice and good.
41:6 And, behold: Seven ears of corn, thin and destroyed by the wind, grew up after them.
41:7 And the seven thin and destroyed by the wind ears of corn swallowed down the seven choice and full ears of corn. And Pharao awoke, and it was a dream.
41:8 And it came to pass [in the] morning that his soul was troubled. And sending, he called all the expositors of Aigyptos, and all her wise [ones]. And Pharao described to them his dream. And there was no one reporting it to Pharao.
41:9 And the chief wine taster spoke to Pharao, saying: “I call my sin to mind today:
41:10 Pharao was provoked to anger [against] his servants, and he put us in guard in the house of the chief guard, both me and the chief baker.
41:11 And we saw a dream, both in one night. I and he, each according to his dream, saw.
41:12 And there was there with us a young servant of the Ebraion, of the chief guard. And we described to him [our dreams], and he interpreted [them] to us.
41:13 And it came to pass, as he interpreted [them] to us, also it came to pass, both me being restored to my chief [position], and that one being hanged.”
41:14 And Pharao having sent, called [for] Ioseph. And they led him from out of the dungeon, and shaved him, and changed his robe, and he came towards Pharao.
41:15 And Pharao said to Ioseph: “I have seen a dream, and there is not [one] interpreting it. But I have heard concerning you saying [that] in your hearing dreams you interpret them.”
41:16 And Ioseph answering to Pharao said: “Without the Theos, salvation shall not be answered to Pharao.”
41:17 And Pharao spoke to Ioseph, saying: “In my dream, I imagined [myself] standing by the lip of the river.
41:18 And as if from out the river ascended seven cows, good to the sight and choice in the flesh. And they fed in the reed-grass.
41:19 And behold: Another seven cows ascended after them from out of the river, bad and shameful to the sight, and thin in the flesh, such as of such a shameful kind I saw not in [the] entire land of Aigyptos.
41:20 And the seven shameful and thin cows ate up the seven first cows, the good and the choice.
41:21 And they entered into their bellies. And it did not become apparent that they entered into their bellies. And their appearance was shameful, as also at the beginning. And [after] awakening, I went [back] to bed.
41:22 And I saw again in my sleep: And as if seven ears of corn ascended in one lower branch, full and good.
41:23 And other seven ears of corn, thin and destroyed by the wind, grew up next to them.
41:24 And the seven thin and destroyed by the wind ears of corn swallowed down the seven good and full ears of corn. I told [it] then to the expositors, and there was no [one] reporting it to me.”
41:25 And Ioseph said to Pharao: “The dream of Pharao is one. As much as the Theos does, he showed [to] Pharao.
41:26 The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good ears of corn are seven years. The dream of Pharao is one.
41:27 And the seven thin cows, the ones ascending after them, are seven years. And the seven thin and destroyed by the wind ears of corn are seven years. There will be seven years of famine.
41:28 And the saying which I have said to Pharao, the Theos will do as much as shown [to] Pharao.
41:29 Behold: For seven years there comes great prosperity in all [the] land of Aigyptos.
41:30 But after these seven years of famine shall come after these, and they shall forget the fullness being in all [the] land of Aigyptos. And the famine will consume the land.
41:31 And the prosperity [will] not be recognized in the land because of the famine being after this, for it will be exceedingly strong.
41:32 And concerning the repetition of the dream to Pharao twice, [this is] because the saying by the Theos will be true, and the Theos will hasten to do it.
41:33 Now then, look around [for a] wise and intelligent human, and place him over [the] land of Aigyptos.
41:34 And let Pharao make and place toparchs over the land. And let them take a fifth of all the produce of the land of Aigyptos of the seven years of the prosperity.
41:35 And let them gather together all the food of these coming seven good years. And let them gather together the grain under [the] hand of Pharao. Let foods be kept in the cities.
41:36 And foods being kept shall be for the land into the seven years of famine, which will be in [the] land of Aigyptos. And the land shall not be obliterated in the famine.”
41:37 And the saying was pleasing before Pharao, and before all his servants.
41:38 And Pharao said [to] all his servants: “Shall we find such a human who has [the] spirit of Theos in him?”
41:39 And Pharao said to Ioseph: “Since the Theos has showed you all this, there is not a wiser or more intelligent human [than] you.
41:40 You will be over my house, and all my people shall obey upon your mouth. Except the throne, [for] I will excel you.”
41:41 And Pharao said to Ioseph: “Behold: I place you today over all the land of Aigyptos.”
41:42 And Pharao removing his ring from his hand, put it upon the hand of Ioseph. And he put on him a robe of fine linen, and put a collar of gold around his neck.
41:43 And he mounted him upon his second chariot, and a herald proclaimed in front of him. And he placed him over [the] entire land of Aigyptos.
41:44 And Pharao said to Ioseph: “I [am] Pharao. Without you not anyone shall lift his hand upon all [the] land of Aigyptos.”
41:45 And Pharao called the name of Ioseph: Psonthomphanech. And he gave him Asenneth, daughter of Petephre, priest of Heliopolis, to him as wife.
42:1 And Iakob, seeing that there is grain for sale in Aigyptos, said to his sons: “Why are you lazy?
42:2 Behold: I have heard that there is grain in Aigyptos. Go down there, and buy for us a small [amount] of foods, that we should live, and not die.”
42:3 And the ten brothers of Ioseph went down to buy grain out of Aigyptos.
42:4 But Beniamin, the brother of Ioseph, [was] not sent with his brothers [by their father Iakob], for he said: “Lest at any time should come to pass to him an illness.”
42:5 And the sons of Israél came to buy with the [ones] coming, for the famine was in [the] land of Chanaán.
42:6 And Ioseph was the ruler of the land. He sold to all the people of the land. And the brothers of Ioseph coming, did obeisance to him upon [their] face upon the ground.
42:7 And Ioseph seeing his brothers, recognized and alienated himself from them, and spoke to them hard [words]. And he said to them: “From what place have you come?” And they said: “From out of [the] land of Chanaán, to buy foods.”
42:8 And Ioseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him.
42:9 And Ioseph remembered his dream, of which he himself saw. And he said to them: “You are spies to study the tracks of the land [in which] you have come.”
42:10 But they said: “Not [so], lord. Your servants came to buy foods.
42:11 We are all sons of one man. We are peaceable. Your servants are not spies.”
42:12 And he said to them: “Not [so]. [On the] contrary: You came to see the tracks of the land.”
42:13 And they said: “We, your servants, are twelve brothers in [the] land of Chanaán. And, behold: Our younger [brother] is with our father today, but the other one is not.”
42:14 And Ioseph said to them: “This is it that I have said to you, saying that you are spies.
42:15 In this you shall appear [to be], by the health of Pharao. No way should you depart from here if your younger brother should not come here.
42:16 Send one of you [back], and take your brother. But you shall be taken away until your words become apparent, if you are truthful or not. But if not, by the health of Pharao, assuredly you are spies.”
42:17 And he put them in prison three days.
42:18 And he said to them on the third day: “You do this, and you shall live, for I fear the Theos:
42:19 If you are peaceable, let one of your brothers be held in prison. But you yourselves proceed, and take back the purchase of your provision.
42:20 And you lead your younger brother to me, and I will trust your words. But if not, you shall die.” And they did so.
42:21 And each said to his brother: “Certainly, for we are in sins around our brother, for we disregarded the affliction of his soul when he besought us, and we listened not to him. And because of this, this affliction came upon us.”
42:22 And Rouben, answering, said to them: “Did I not speak to you, saying: ‘Do not wrong to the boy’, and you did not listen to me? And behold: His blood is demanding back.”
42:23 But they knew not that Ioseph understood them, for the translator was between them.
42:24 And turning away from them, Ioseph wept. And he came back, near to them, and spoke to them. And he took Symeon from them, and tied him before them.
42:25 And Ioseph gave charge to fill up their containers of grain, and to return their silver to each into his sackcloth, and to give them provisions for the way. And it became to them so.
42:26 And placing the grain upon their donkeys, they departed from there.
42:27 And one, [while] untying his bag to give fodder [to] his donkeys where they rested, saw his bundle of silver, for it was upon the mouth of his bag.
42:28 And he said to his brothers: “The silver was given back to me. And behold: This [was] in my bag.” And it astonished their heart. And they were troubled, saying one towards another: “What [is] this [that] the Theos did to us?”
42:29 And they came to their father Iakob, into [the] land of Chanaán. And they reported to him all that had happened to them, saying:
42:30 “The human, the lord of the land, spoke words to us hard [words], and put us in prison as spying out the land.
42:31 And we said to him: ‘We are peaceable. We are not spies.
42:32 We are twelve brothers, sons of our father. One is not, and the younger [is] today with our father in [the] land of Chanaán.’
42:33 And the human, the lord of the land, said to us: ‘In this will I know that you are peaceable: You leave one of your brothers here with me. And having taken the purchase of the provision for your house, you go forth.
42:34 And you lead to me your younger brother, and I shall know that you are not spies, but that you are peaceable. And I will give back your brother to you. And you can trade in the land.’ ”
42:35 And it came to pass in their emptying their sackcloths, that there was a bundle of silver in each in their sackcloth. And they saw their bundles of silver, to them and their father, and they feared.
42:36 And their father Iakob said to them: “You are making me childless: Ioseph is not, Symeon is not, and you will take Beniamin? Upon me all these things happened.”
42:37 And Rouben said to his father, saying: “The two sons of mine you may kill if I do not lead him to you. Give him into my hand, and I will lead him [back] to you.”
42:38 But he said: “My son shall not go down with you, because his [full] brother died, and he alone is left behind. And [suppose] it shall come to pass [that] he is afflicted in the way whichever you go, then you will lead me in my old age with sorrow into Hades.”
42:39 But the famine was severe upon the land.
43:1 And it came to pass, when they completed eating up the grain which they brought from Aigyptos, that their father said to them: “In going again, you buy us a small [amount] of foods.”
43:2 And Ioudas said to him, saying: “The human, the lord of the land, bore witness by testifying to us, saying: ‘You shall not see my face if your younger brother should not come with you.’
43:3 If then, you send our brother with us, we will go down, and we will buy foods for you.
43:4 But if you do not send our brother with us, we will not go, for the human said to us, saying: ‘You shall not see my face if your younger brother should not be with you.’ ”
43:5 And Israél said: “Why did you do evil [to] me [by] announcing to the human that there is to you a brother?”
43:6 And they said: “In asking, the human asked of us and our family, saying if our father still lives, and if there is to us a brother? And we reported to him according to his questioning. We did not know that he would say to us: ‘Bring your brother!’ ”
43:7 And Ioudas said towards his father Israél: “Send the boy with me. And rising up, let us go, that we may live and not die, namely we and you, and our belongings.
43:8 And I will wait for him. You demand him [back] from out of my hand. If I do not lead him towards you, and place him before you, I will be sinning into you all the days.
43:9 For if we had not delayed, we should have returned already even twice.”
43:10 And their father Israél said to them: “If it is so, you do this: Take from the fruits of the earth in your containers, and bring down to the human gifts of balm, and honey, and incense, and balsam, and turpentine, and walnuts.
43:11 And take double silver in your hands. And the silver being returned in your bags, return it with you, perhaps it is by mistake.
43:12 And take your brother. And rising, go down towards the human.
43:13 And [may] my God give you favor before the human, and send off your other brother, the [held] one, and Beniamin, for I as much as I indeed have been made childless, I have been made childless.”
43:14 And the men receiving these gifts, and the double silver they took in their hands, and Beniamin. And rising up, they went down to Aigyptos, and stood before Ioseph.
43:15 And Ioseph saw them, and his brother Beniamin, the one born of the same mother. And he said to the [steward] over of his house [-hold]: “Bring the men into the house, and slay that which is offered in sacrifices, and make [this] ready, for the men will eat bread loaves with me at noon.”
43:16 And the human did as Ioseph said. And he brought the men into the house of Ioseph.
43:17 And the men seeing that they were brought into the house of Ioseph, said: “On account of the silver returned in our bags at first, we are brought in, to accuse us falsely and to place [charge] upon us, to take us as servants, and our donkeys.”
43:18 And coming forward towards the human, the [steward] over the house [-hold] of Ioseph, they spoke to him in the vestibule of the house,
43:19 saying: “We beseech [you], lord. We went down at first to buy foods.
43:20 And it came to pass when we came to rest up, and we opened our bags, that thus the silver [was] in each of his bag. We returned now our silver in [the] weight in our hands.
43:21 And we brought other silver with ourselves to buy foods. We do not know who put the silver into our bags.”
43:22 And he said to them: “Propitious [it will be] to you. Do not fear. Your Theos, and the Theos of your fathers, gave to you treasures in your bags. And in approving, I keep away from your silver.” And he let Symeon out to them.
43:23 And he brought water to wash their feet. And he gave fodder [to] their donkeys.
43:24 And they prepared the gifts until Ioseph came at noon, for they heard that he was about to dine there.
43:25 And Ioseph entered into the house. And they brought him the gifts which they had in their hands into the house. And they did obeisance to him upon [their] face upon the ground.
43:26 And he asked them: “How have you [been]?” And he said to them: “Is your father, the old man of whom you spoke, healthy? Does he still live?”
43:27 And they said: “He is in health. Your servant, our father, still lives.” And he said: “Blessed be that human by the Theos.” And bowing, they did obeisance to him.
43:28 And looking up with his eyes, he saw his brother Beniamin, the one born of the same mother. And he said: “[Is] this your younger brother, whom you spoke of bringing to me?” And he said: “[May] the Theos show mercy to you, child.”
43:29 And Ioseph was troubled, for his innards twisted together over his brother. And he was seeking to weep. And he entered into the storeroom to wept there.
43:30 And he washed [his] face. And coming forth, he controlled himself, and said: “Place [the] bread loaves.”
43:31 And they placed [this] to him alone, and to them by themselves, and to the Aigyptiois dining with them by themselves, for the Aigyptiois [were] not able to eat bread loaves with the Ebraion, for it is an abomination to the Aigyptiois.
43:32 And he seated before himself the first-born, according to his seniority, and the younger, according to his youthfulness. And the humans each were looking amazed at his brother.
43:33 And they took up [the] portions from him to them. But the portion of Beniamin was magnified over the portions of all: five-fold towards those [others]. And they drank and became intoxicated with him.
44:1 And Ioseph gave charge to the [steward] of his house [-hold], saying: “Fill the bags the humans [with] foods, as much as they are able to lift away, and put in each the silver at the mouth of the bag.
44:2 And put my silver drinking cup into the bag of the younger, and the value of his grain.” And it happened according to the word of Ioseph, as he said.
44:3 In the morning light shone through, and the humans were sent, they and their donkeys.
44:4 But [in] their going forth from out of the city, not [at a] far distance, that Ioseph said to the [one] over his house: “In rising up, pursue after the humans. And you shall overtake them, and say to them: ‘For what reason did you recompense evil for good?
44:5 Why did you steal my silver drinking cup? Is this not in which my lord drinks, and he foretells [an] omen in it? You accomplished evil [in that] which you have done.’ ”
44:6 And having found them, he said to them according to these words.
44:7 And they said to him: “Why does the lord speak according to these words? [It] is not for your servants to do according to this word.
44:8 If we returned to you from out of [the] land of Chanaán the silver which we found in our bags, how then would we steal silver or gold from out of the house of your lord?
44:9 With whomsoever of your servants the drinking cup should be found, let him die, and we will [then] also be servants to our lord.”
44:10 And he said: “Now then, it will be as you say: With whomsoever the drinking cup shall be found, he will be my servant, and you all shall be clear.”
44:11 And they hastened, and each lowered his bag upon the ground, and each opened his bag.
44:12 And he searched, beginning from the older, until he came to the younger. And he found the drinking cup in the bag of Beniamin.
44:13 And they tore their cloaks, and each placed his bag upon his donkey, and returned to the city.
44:14 And Ioudas and his brothers entered towards Ioseph, while he [was] there. And they fell before him upon the ground.
44:15 And Ioseph said to them: “What [is] this you did? Did you not know that a human such as I shall foretell an omen?”
44:16 And Ioudas said: “How shall we contradict the lord, or what shall we say, or how shall we be justified? For the Theos found the unrighteousness of your servants. Behold: We are servants to our lord, both we and [he] with whom the drinking cup was found.”
44:17 And Ioseph said: “Let it not be to me to do this word. The human with whom the cup was found, he will be my servant. But you all ascend with safety to your father.”
44:18 And approaching to him, Ioudas said: “I beseech, lord: Let your servant speak before you, and be not enraged [with] your servant, for you are [right] after Pharao.
44:19 Lord, you asked your servants, saying: ‘Have you a father or brother?’
44:20 And we said to the lord: “There is to us a father, an old man, and a younger child in his old age. And his brother died. And he was left behind, alone of his mother. And his father loved him.
44:21 And you said to your servants: ‘Lead him to me, and I will take care of him.’
44:22 And we said to the lord: ‘The child is not able to leave his father. But if he should leave [his] father, he will die.’
44:23 But you said to your servants: ‘If your younger brother [does] not go down with you, you shall not add to see my face.’
44:24 And it happened when we ascended to your servant, our father, we reported to him the words of our lord.
44:25 And our father said: ‘Proceed again, and buy for us a small [amount] of foods.’
44:26 And we said: ‘We will not be able to go down. But if then our younger brother goes down with us, we will go down. For we will not be able to see the face of the human [if] our younger brother not being with us.’
44:27 And our father, your servant, said to us: ‘You know that my wife bore me two [sons].
44:28 And one went forth from me, and you said that he was devoured by wild beasts, and I did not see him as far as now.
44:29 If then you should take this [one] also from my face, and an illness comes to pass to him in the way, then [know that] you will lead me in old age with distress into Hades.’
44:30 Now then, if I should enter into your servant and our father, and the child should not be with us, then [know] his life depends on this one’s life.
44:31 And it will be in his seeing the child not being with us, [that] he will come to an end, and your servants will lead your servant, and our father, [in] old age with distress into Hades.
44:32 For your servant has looked out for the child for my father, saying: ‘If I lead him not to you, and place him before you, I will be sinning towards [my] father all the days.’
44:33 Now then, I will remain to you [as a] servant instead of the child, [as a] domestic servant of my lord. But let the child ascend with his brothers.
44:34 For how shall I ascend towards the father [while] the child not being with us? [I beg] that I should not see the evils which will [then] find my father.”
45:1 And Ioseph [was] not able to withhold of all [to] the [ones] standing beside him. Thus, he said: “Send all away from me.” And no one stood beside Ioseph when he made himself known to his brothers.
45:2 And he let [it] go with a voice of weeping. And all the Aigyptiois heard [it], and it became audible into the house of Pharao.
45:3 And Ioseph said to his brothers: “I am Ioseph. [Does] my father still live?” And the brothers [were] not able to respond to him, for they were disturbed.
45:4 And Ioseph said to his brothers: “Approach towards to me.” And they approached. And he said: “I am your brother Ioseph, whom you delivered into Aigyptos.
45:5 Now then, be not distressed, nor let it appear harsh to you that you delivered me here, for the Theos sent me into life before you.
45:6 For this second year [there is] famine upon the earth, and [there are] still five years remaining in which there is no ploughing nor harvest.
45:7 For the Theos sent me before you [that there might] be left to you a remnant upon the earth, even a great remnant to nourish you.
45:8 Now then, you did not send me here, but the Theos. And he has made me as [a] father to Pharao, and lord of all his house, and ruler of all [the] land of Aigyptos.
45:9 Hastening then, you ascend to my father, and say to him: ‘Thus says your son Ioseph: The Theos made me lord of all the land of Aigyptos. Therefore, come down to me, and remain not [there].
45:10 And you shall dwell in [the] land of Gesem of Arabia. And you will be near me, you and your sons, and the sons of your sons, your sheep and your cows, and as much as is yours.
45:11 And I will nourish you there, for [there is] still five years of famine, that you shall not be obliterated, you and your sons, and all your possessions.’
45:12 Behold: Your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Beniamin, that my mouth [is] speaking to you.
45:13 Therefore, report [to] my father all my glory in Aigyptos, and as much as you saw. And hastening, bring down my father here.
45:14 And falling upon the neck of his brother Beniamin, he wept upon him. And Beniamin wept upon his neck.
45:15 And kissing all his brothers, he wept upon them. And after this, his brothers spoke to him.
45:16 And the report was proclaimed forth into the house of Pharao, saying: “The brothers of Ioseph have come.” And Pharao rejoiced, and his service.
45:17 And Pharao said [to] Ioseph: “Say to your brothers: ‘Do this: Fill your carriages, and go forth into [the] land of Chanaán.
45:18 And taking up your father and your possessions, come to me. And I will give to you of all the good [things] of Aigyptos. And you shall eat the marrow of the land.’
45:19 And you charge them to take for them wagons from out of [the] land of Aigyptos for your children and your wives. ‘And taking up your father, come!
45:20 And be not sparing to the eyes of your goods, for all the good [things] of Aigyptos will be unto you.”
45:21 And they did thus, the sons of Israél. And Ioseph gave to them wagons, according to the sayings by the king Pharao. And he gave to them provisions for the journey.
45:22 And he gave to all double robes. But to Beniamin, he gave three hundred [pieces] of gold, and five changings of robes.
45:23 And to his father, he sent according to the same, and ten donkeys carrying [the gifts] of all the good [things] of Aigyptos, and ten mules carrying bread loaves to his father into the journey.
45:24 And he sent out his brothers, and they went. And he said to them: “Do not be provoked to anger in the way.”
45:25 And they ascended from out of Aigyptos. And they came into [the] land of Chanaán, to their father Iakob.
45:26 And they announced to him, saying that: “Your son Ioseph lives, and he rules over all [the] land of Aigyptos.” And Iakob receded in [his] thought, for he did not trust them.
45:27 But they spoke to him all the sayings of Ioseph, as much as he said to them. And seeing the wagons which Ioseph sent, so as to take him, the spirit of their father Iakob rekindled.
45:28 And Israél said: “It is great to me if my son Ioseph still lives. In going, I will see him before dying.”
46:1 And Israél departing, and all of his, he came upon the well of the oath. And he offered sacrifice to the Theos of his father Isaák.
46:2 And the Theos spoke to Israél in a vision in the night, saying: “Iakob, Iakob.” And he said: “What is it?”
46:3 And he says to him: “I am the Theos of your fathers. Fear not to go down into Aigyptos, for I will make you there into a great nation.
46:4 And I will go down with you into Aigyptos. And I will make you go up into [the] end. And Ioseph shall put his hands on your eyes.”
46:5 And Iakob rose up from the well of the oath. And the sons of Israél took up their father, and the belongings, and their wives upon the wagons, which Ioseph sent to take them.
46:6 And taking up their possessions, and all the property which they acquired in [the] land of Chanaán, they entered into Aigyptos, Iakob, and all his seed with him:
46:7 sons, and sons of his sons with him, [and] daughters, and daughters of his daughters. And all his seed, he led into Aigyptos.
46:8 And these [are] the names of the sons of Israél, the [ones] entering into Aigyptos together with their father Iakob: Iakob and his sons: [the] first-born of Iakob, Rouben.
46:9 And [the] sons of Rouben: Enoch, and Phallous, Asron, and Charmi.
46:10 And [the] sons of Symeon: Iemouél, and Iameín, and Aod, and Iachin, and Saár, and Saoul, [the] son of a woman of the Chananioin.
46:11 And [the] sons of Levi: Gerson, Kaáth, and Merari.
46:12 And [the] sons of Ioudas: Er, and Aunan, and Selom, and Phares, and Zara. And Er and Aunan died in the land of Chanaán. And [the] sons born of Phares: Esron, and Iemouél.
46:13 And [the] sons of Issachar: Thola, and Phoua, and Iasoúb, and Zambram.
46:14 And [the] sons of Zaboulon: Sered, and Allon, and Achoél.
46:15 These [are the] sons of Leia, whom she bore [to] Iakob in Mesopotamia of Syria, and his daughter Deina: all the thirty-three souls, sons and daughters.
46:16 And [the] sons of Gad: Saphon, and Aggis, and Saunis, and Thasoban, and Aedeís, and Aroedeís, and Areéleís.
46:17 And [the] sons of Aser: Iemna, Iessouá, and Ieoúl, and Baria, and their sister Sara. And [the] sons of Baria: Chobor, and Melchiíl.
46:18 These [are the] sons of Zelpha, whom Laban gave to his daughter Leia, who bore these to Iakob: sixteen souls.
46:19 And [the] sons of Rachel, [the] wife of Iakob: Ioseph, and Beniamin.
46:20 And [the] sons of Ioseph born in [the] land of Aigyptos, whom Asenneth, [the] daughter of Petephres, priest of Heliopolis, bore to him: Manasses, and Ephraïm. And [there] were sons born to Manasses, whom the Syrian concubine bore to him: Machir. And Machir begot Galaád. And [the] sons of Ephraïm, [the] brother of Manasses: Soutalaám, and Taám. And [the] sons of Soutalaám: Edem.
46:21 And [the] sons of Beniamin: Bala, and Chobor, and Asbel. And [the] sons of Bala were Gera, and Noeman, and Agchis, and Ros, and Mamphim, and Ophimin. And Gera begot Arad.
46:22 These [are the] sons of Rachel, which she bore to Iakob: all the eighteen souls.
46:23 And [the] sons of Dan: Asom.
46:24 And [the] sons of Nephthaleím: Asiél, and Gouni, and Issaár, and Syllem.
46:25 These [are the] sons of Bala, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel, who bore these to Iakob: all the seven souls.
46:26 And all the souls entering with Iakob into Aigyptos, the [ones] coming forth from out of his thighs, besides the wives of Iakob’s sons: all sixty-six souls.
46:27 And [the] sons of Ioseph, being born to him in [the] land of Aigyptos, [were] nine souls. All [the] souls of [the] house of Iakob of the ones entering with Ioseph into Aigyptos [were] seventy-five souls.
46:28 And he sent Ioudas in front of him to Ioseph, to meet him near the city of Heroós, into [the] land of Ramesses.
46:29 And Ioseph teaming up his chariots, ascended to meet his father Israél, at the city of Heroós. And perceiving him, he fell upon his neck, and wept with abundant weeping.
46:30 And Israél said to Ioseph: “I will [peacefully] die from now [on], since I have seen your face, for you still live.”
46:31 And Ioseph said to his brothers: “In ascending, I will report to Pharao. And I will say to him: ‘My brothers and the house of my father, who were in [the] land of Chanaán, have come to me.
46:32 And the men are shepherds, for they were men for grazing cattle. And they have brought the cattle, and the oxen, and all their [property].’
46:33 If then Pharao should call you, and he should say to you: ‘What is your work?’,
46:34 you shall say: ‘We, your servants, are men grazing cattle from child [-hood] until the present, both we and our fathers’, that you may dwell in [the] land of Gesem of Arabia, for every shepherd of flocks [is an] abomination to [the] Aigyptiois.
47:1 And Ioseph came and told Pharao, [saying]: “My father, and my brothers, and their cattle, and their oxen, and all that is theirs, are come out of [the] land of Chanaán, and behold: They are in [the] land of Gesem.”
47:2 And he took along of his brothers five men, and set them before Pharao.
47:3 And Pharao said to the brothers of Ioseph: “What is your occupation?” And they said to Pharao: “Your servants are shepherds of sheep, both we and our fathers.”
47:4 And they said to Pharao: “We are come to sojourn in the land, for there is no pasture for the flocks of your servants, for the famine has prevailed in [the] land of Chanaán. Therefore, your servants will now dwell in [the] land of Gesem.”
47:5 And Pharao said to Ioseph: “Let them settle in [the] land of Gesem. And if you know that there are capable men among them, appoint them as rulers of my cattle.” And Iakob and his sons came into Aigyptos, to Ioseph. And Pharao, [the] king of Aigyptos, heard [of it].
47:6 And Pharao spoke to Ioseph, saying: “Your father and your brothers have come to you. Behold: The land of Aigyptos is before you. Settle your father and your brothers in the best land.”
47:7 And Ioseph brought in his father Iakob, and set him before Pharao. And Iakob blessed Pharao.
47:8 And Pharao said to Iakob: “How many are the years of the days of your life?”
47:9 And Iakob said to Pharao: “The days of the years of my life, wherein I sojourn, are a hundred thirty years. Few and grievous have been the days of the years of my life. They did not attain to the days of the years of the life of my fathers, in which days they sojourned.”
47:10 And Iakob blessing Pharao, he departed from him.
47:11 And Ioseph settled his father and his brothers, and granted them a holding in [the] land of Aigyptos, in the best land, in [the] land of Ramesses, as Pharao had ordered.
47:12 And Ioseph gave provision to his father, and his brothers, and to all the house of his father, grain for every body.
47:13 And there was no grain in all the land, for the famine prevailed greatly. And [the] land of Aigyptos, and [the] land of Chanaán, failed because of the famine.
47:14 And Ioseph gathered all the silver that was found in [the] land of Aigyptos, and [the] land of Chanaán, [in return for] the grain which they bought, and he distributed grain to them. And Ioseph brought all the silver into the house of Pharao.
47:15 And all the silver from out of [the] land of Aigyptos and from out of ]the] land of Chanaán failed. And all the Aigyptiois came to Ioseph, saying: “Give us bread loaves”, and “Why are we dying in your presence, for our silver has failed?”
47:16 And Ioseph said to them: “Bring your cattle, and I will give you bread loaves for your cattle, if your silver has failed.”
47:17 And they brought their cattle to Ioseph. And Ioseph gave them bread loaves in return for the horses, and for the sheep, and for the oxen, and for the donkeys. And he maintained them with bread loaves for all their cattle in that year.
47:18 And that year came to an end, and they came to him in the second year, and said to him: “Must we then be consumed from before our lord, for if our silver has failed, and our possessions and our cattle [belong] to you, our lord, then there has not been left to us before our lord more than our own body and our land.
47:19 So lest we die before you, and the land be desolated, acquire us and our land for bread loaves, and we and our land will be servants to Pharao. Give seed that we may sow, and live and not die, so our land shall not be desolated.”
47:20 And Ioseph acquired all [the] land of the Aigyptiois for Pharao, for the Aigyptiois sold their land to Pharao, because the famine prevailed against them. And the land became Pharao’s.
47:21 And he brought the people into bondage to him, as servants, from one extreme boundary of Aigyptos to the [other] extreme,
47:22 except only [the] land of the priests. Ioseph did not acquire this, for by a grant Pharao gave a gift to the priests. And they ate their portion which Pharao gave them. Therefore, they sold not their land.
47:23 And Ioseph said to all the Aigyptiois: “Behold: I have acquired you and your land today for Pharao. Take seed for yourselves, and sow the land.
47:24 And there will be produce from it. And you shall give the fifth part to Pharao, and the four [remaining] parts shall be for yourselves, as seed for the land, and as food for you, and all that are in your houses.”
47:25 And they said: “You have saved us. We have found favor before our lord, and we will be servants to Pharao.”
47:26 And Ioseph appointed it to them for an ordinance upon [the] land of Aigyptos until this day: to give a fifth part to Pharao, except only [the] land of the priests, [as] that was not Pharao’s.
47:27 And Israél settled in [the] land of Aigyptos, in [the] land of Gesem. And they gained an inheritance upon it. And they increased and multiplied exceedingly.
47:28 And Iakob survived seventeen years in [the] land of Aigyptos. And Iakob’s days of the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven years.
47:29 And the days of Israél drew near for him to die. And he called his son Ioseph, and said to him: “If I have found favor before you, put your hand under my thigh, and [swear that] you shall bring about mercy and truth for me, so as not to bury me in Aigyptos,
47:30 but [that] I will lie with my fathers. And you shall carry me out of Aigyptos, and bury me in their sepulchre.” And he said: “I will do according to your word.”
47:31 And he said: “Swear to me.” And he swore to him. And Israél did obeisance upon the top of his staff.
48:1 And it came to pass after these things, that it was reported to Ioseph that: “Your father is ill.” And taking along his two sons, Manasse and Ephraïm, he came to Iakob.
48:2 And it was reported to Iakob, saying: “Behold: Your son Ioseph comes to you.” And Israél having strengthened himself, sat upon the bed.
48:3 And Iakob said to Ioseph: “My Theos appeared to me in Louza, in [the] land of Chanaán, and blessed me,
48:4 and said to me: “Behold: I will increase you, and will multiply you, and will make you into gatherings of nations. And I will give this land to you, and to your seed after you, into an aeonial confiscation.
48:5 Now therefore, your two sons, who were born to you in [the] land of Aigyptos, before I came into Aigyptos to you, are mine: Ephraïm and Manasse. Like Rouben and Symeon, they shall be mine.
48:6 And the descendants which you shall beget hereafter, shall be in the name of their brothers. They shall be named after their inheritances.
48:7 And as for me, when I came out of Mesopotamia of Syria, your mother Rachel died in [the] land of Chanaán, as I drew near to the hippodrome of Chabratha of the land [of Chanaán], so as to come to Ephratha. And I buried her in the way to the hippodrome.”; this is Bethleém.
48:8 And seeing the sons of Ioseph, Israél said: “Who are these to you?”
48:9 And Ioseph said to his father: “They are my sons, whom the Theos gave me here.” And Iakob said: “Bring them to me, that I may bless them.”
48:10 Now the eyes of Israél were dim through age, and he could not see [so well]. And he brought them near to him. And he kissed them, and embraced them.
48:11 And Israél said to Ioseph: “Behold: I have not been deprived of [seeing] your face, and behold: The Theos has showed me your seed also.”
48:12 And Ioseph brought them out from [between] his knees. And they did obeisance to him, upon [the] face upon the ground.
48:13 And Ioseph taking both his two sons: Ephraïm in his right hand, but on the left of Israél, and Manasse in his left hand, but on the right of Israél, he brought them near to him.
48:14 But Israél stretching out his right hand, laid it on the head of Ephraïm, but he was the younger; and his left hand on the head of Manasse, [guiding] his hands crosswise.
48:15 And he blessed them and said: “The Theos in whose sight my fathers Abraám and Isaák were well pleasing, the Theos who continues to feed me from my youth until this day,
48:16 the messenger who delivers me from all evils, bless these boys. And my name shall be called upon them, and the name of my fathers Abraám and Isaák. And let them be increased into a great multitude upon the earth.”
48:17 But Ioseph having seen that his father put his right hand on the head of Ephraïm, this seemed grievous to him. And Ioseph took hold of the hand of his father, to remove it from the head of Ephraïm to the head of Manasse.
48:18 And Ioseph said to his father: “Not so, father, for this is the first-born. Lay your right-hand upon his head.”
48:19 And he would not, but said: “I know, son, I know. And this one also shall become a people, and this one shall be exalted, but his younger brother shall be greater than he. And his seed shall become a multitude of nations.”
48:20 And he blessed them in that day, saying: “In you will Israél be blessed [when they] say: ‘[May] the Theos make you as Ephraïm and Manasse.’ ” And he put Ephraïm ahead of Manasse.
48:21 And Israél said to Ioseph: “Behold: I am about to die. And the Theos will be with you, and restore you to the land of your fathers.
48:22 Now I give to you Sikima, as something special beyond your brothers, which I took out of the hand of the Amorraion with my short sword and bow.”
49:1 And Iakob called his sons, and said to them: “Gather together that I may tell you what will happen to you in the last days.
49:2 Assemble and hear me, sons of Iakob. Hear your father Israél.
49:3 Rouben, you [are] my firstborn, my strength, and the first of my children, hard to be endured, harsh, [and] self-pleasing.
49:4 You became wanton like water. Do not boil over, for you went up upon the bed of your father. Then you defiled the couch, where you went up.
49:5 Symeon and Levi [are the] brothers [who] perpetrated injustice by their choice.
49:6 May my soul not come into their council, and let not my inward parts press in on their company, for in their wrath they killed humans, and in their desire they hamstrung a bull.
49:7 Cursed be their wrath, for it was self-pleasing, and their anger, for it was cruel. I will divide them in Iakob, and scatter them in Israél.
49:8 Iouda: May your brothers praise you. Be your hands on the back of your enemies. Your father’s sons shall do obeisance to you.
49:9 A lion’s whelp you are, Iouda. From a shoot, my son, you went up. In reclining, you slept like a lion. And as a whelp, who will rouse him?
49:10 A ruler shall not fail from out of Iouda, nor a chief from his thighs, until that [being] stored up for him comes. And he is the expectation of nations.
49:11 Binding his foal to [a] vine, and the foal of his donkey to the tendril [of it], he shall wash his robe in wine, and his garment in the blood of a bunch of grapes.
49:12 His eyes shall be more cheering than wine, and his teeth whiter than milk.
49:13 Zaboulon shall settle by the sea, and he [shall be] near a haven of ships, and shall extend as far as Sidon.
49:14 Issachar desired the good, resting between the inheritances.
49:15 And seeing the resting place, that it was good, and the land, that it was rich, he subjected his shoulder to labor, and became a farmer.
49:16 Dan shall judge his own people, as also one tribe in Israél.
49:17 And let Dan become a serpent in the way, besetting the path, biting the heel of [a] horse, and the rider shall fall backwards,
49:18 awaiting the deliverance of the lord.
49:19 Gad: [A] raider gang shall raid him, but he shall raid close on their heels.
49:20 Aser: His bread [is] fat, and he shall give luxuriousness to rulers.
49:21 Nephthaleím is a spreading stem, bestowing beauty by the produce.
49:22 Ioseph is an increased son. My zealous son is increased. My youngest son, return to me.
49:23 One at whom, while deliberating, they would rail, and masters of arrows would have it in for him.
49:24 But their bow and arrows were mightily consumed, and the sinews of their arms were slackened through the hand of the mighty one of Iakob. Thenceforward he is the [one who] strengthened Israél from the Theos of your father.
49:25 And my Theos helped you, and he blessed you with the blessing of heaven from above, and the blessing of the earth containing all [things], because of [the] blessing of [the] breasts and of [the] womb.
49:26 [The] blessing of your father and your mother, it has prevailed above the blessing of the stable mountains, and above the blessings of the ever-flowing dunes. They shall be upon the head of Ioseph, and upon the crown of the brothers of whom he led.
49:27 Beniamin [is a] ravening wolf: In the early morning he shall still be devouring, and at evening he shall distribute food.
49:28 All these [are] the twelve sons of Iakob. And this their father spoke to them, and he blessed them. Each one according to his blessing, he blessed them.
49:29 And he said to them: “I am [about to be] added to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave which is in the field of Ephron the Chettaion,
49:30 in the double cave which is opposite Mambre, in [the] land of Chanaán, the cave which Abraám acquired from Ephron the Chettaion in acquisition of a sepulchre.
49:31 There they buried there Abraám and his wife Sarra. And there they buried Isaák and his wife Rebekka. And there they buried Leia,
49:32 in the acquisition of the field, and of the cave that is in it, from the sons of Chet.
49:33 And Iakob ceased giving charges to his sons. And lifted his feet onto the bed, he breathed his last, and he was added to his people.
50:1 And falling upon [the] face of his father, Ioseph wept over him, and kissed him.
50:2 And Ioseph ordered his servants, the buriers, prepare his father for burial. And the undertakers prepared Israél for burial.
50:3 And they completed [preparing] him [in] forty days, for so the days of burial are reckoned. And Aigyptos mourned for him [for] seventy days.
50:4 And after the days of mourning went by, Ioseph spoke to the mighty ones of Pharao, saying: “If I found favor before you, speak into the ears of Pharao, saying:
50:5 My father made me swear an oath before his coming to an end, saying: ‘In the tomb that I dug myself in [the] land of Chanaán, there entomb me.’ Now then, ascending, I will entomb my father, and I will return.’
50:6 And Pharao said to Ioseph: ‘Ascend [and] entomb your father, as he made you swear by an oath.’
50:7 And Ioseph ascended to entomb his father. And all the servants of Pharao went up with him, and the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Aigyptos,
50:8 and all the households of Ioseph and his brothers, and all the house of his father and the kin [-dred]. And the sheep and the oxen were left behind in [the] land of Gesem.
50:9 And also chariots and horsemen went up with him. And the camp became exceedingly great.
50:10 And they came upon the threshing-floor of Atad, which is across the Iordanés. And they lamented him by an exceedingly great and strong lamentation. And he made the mourning for his father [for] seven days.
50:11 And the inhabitants of the land of Chanaán saw the mourning at [the] threshing-floor of Atad. And they said: “This is a great mourning to the Aigyptiois.” On account of this they called the name of that place: Mourning-of-Aigyptos, which is across the Iordanés.
50:12 And his sons did to him as he gave charge to them.
50:13 So his sons took him up into [the] land of Chanaán. And they entombed him in the double cave opposite Mambre, the cave which Abraám acquired for a possession of a tomb from Ephron the Chettaion.
50:14 And Ioseph returned to Aigyptos, he and his brothers, and those going up with [him] to entomb his father.
50:15 And the brothers of Ioseph knowing that their father died, said: “Lest at any time Ioseph should resent us, and with a recompense, recompense to us all the evils which we demonstrated against him.”
50:16 And having come towards Ioseph, they said: “Your father bound [us] by an oath before he came to an end, saying:
50:17 So say to Ioseph: ‘Forgive them their the injustice and their sin, for [the] wicked [deed that] they demonstrated against you. And now accept the injustice of the attendants of the Theos of your father.’ ” And Ioseph wept [during] their speaking towards him.
50:18 And coming towards him, they said: “See: We are your domestics.”
50:19 And Ioseph said to them: “Fear not, for I am of the Theos.
50:20 You took counsel concerning me into evil, but the Theos took counsel concerning me into good, that it should be as [it is] today, and that he might maintain many people.”
50:21 And he said to them: “Fear not. I will maintain you, and your houses.” And he comforted them and spoke of them into the heart.
50:22 And Ioseph dwelt in Aigyptos, he and his brothers, and with all the households of his father. And Ioseph lived hundred ten years.
50:23 And Ioseph saw [the] children of Ephraïm unto [the] third generation. And the sons of Macheír, the son of Manasse, were born upon the thighs of Ioseph.
50:24 And Ioseph said to his brothers, saying: “[After] I die, and visiting the Theos will visit you, and lead you from out of this land into the land that the Theos swore by an oath [to] your fathers Abraám, Isaák, and Iakob.”
50:25 And Ioseph made the sons of Israél swear by an oath, saying: “In the visitation in which the Theos will visit you, you shall join in carrying off my bones from here with you.”
50:26 And Ioseph came to an end, hundred ten years [old]. And they entombed him, and placed [him] in the coffin in Aigyptos.
