Vivere : Dare to Live

Vivo ricopiando “yesterday”
e sono sempre in mezzo ai guai.
Vivo e ti domando cosa sei,

Per poi capire all’improvviso …
(Perché?)
… che in fondo questa vita tu …
… non l’hai vissuta mai.

Ti dico no.
Ti dico si.
Ti dico che …
… ho voglia di vivere!

I live copying yesterday
and I’m always in trouble.
I live and I ask you what you are,
but mirror, you never speak.

I, who will never be able to create anything.
I love the love but not the people.
I, who will never be a god.

Living, nobody has ever taught us (how).
Living, photocopying the past.
Living, even if I didn’t ask (for it).
Living, like a song that nobody would ever sing.

But if you saw a man in front of your door
sleeping wrapped in a cardboard box.
If you listen to the world,
one morning without the noise of the rain.
You who can create with your voice.
You think the thoughts of the people.
Then God is but one God.

Living, nobody has ever taught us (how).
Living, you can’t live without a past.
Living is beautiful even if you have never asked (for it).
A song, there will always be someone to sing it.

Someone is not enough.
(Why, why, why, why?)
Living, still searching for the great love.
(Not alive tonight?)
Living as if we were never to die.
(Why, why, why, why not alive now?)
Living and then suddenly understand after all
that you …
(Why, why, why, why living is not living?)
… have not lived.

Living, still searching for the great love.
Living as if we were never to die.
(Why, why, why, living is not living?)
And then suddenly understanding …
(Why?)
… that you after all …
… have never really lived.

I tell you no.
I tell you yes.
I tell you that …
… I want to live!

This Italian song was written by Gerardina Trovato (1967). It was first recorded as a duet between herself and Andrea Bocelli (1958) in 1995. The audio embedded above contains a live version of this song performed by the both singers. The translation of this song text into English is done by Johan Oldenkamp.

Many people assume that it an ordinary love song. However, this song is not about the lost love between two people. It is about finding the Great Love. This Great Love is the Love of Life, or, as we can also say: the Love of God! Therefore, it is a Wholly Science song.

Thank you, Gerardina, for writing it, and thank you, Gerardina and Andrea, for singing it so passionately!
